I can buy it when a couple gets together when they are very young and never had a serious conversation about kids in the early stages of the relationship because it started casual and neither of them had really thought about whether they truly want kids, anyway, since having kids feels like a thing in the far distant future. Once they get a bit older and that possible future gets less distant they might think about it and realize they have incomparable goals and should break up.

If a couple is not super young when they get together, then yes, they really, really should have discussed this early on. It's ridiculous and defies the suspension of disbelief when they don't. (People can still change their mind, but that's a different thing.)
