153. This is why my self-esteem is non-existent. Thank you very much.

[identity profile] iamthemurderer.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, don't worry about it, really. There will always be people you dislike you for absolutely no good reason whether you're skinny, heavy, pretty, ugly and everything in between.

[identity profile] justaminuet.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't even listen to them. One of my friends would be in that OP's definition of "fat," and she makes the most gorgeous costumes, and looks awesome in all of them (and has won awards for them). Personally, everyone can look pretty; it's just knowing what works best for you that's the key.

Seconded! I've got no problem with any kind of cosplay, whether it's tall people cosplaying short characters, guys cosplaying girls, whatever. But you have to have a sense of self-awareness when you do it, because you're more or less putting yourself on display. If you know your body, love your body, and appreciate your body IN ITS ENTIRETY, then you'll be awesome no matter what you cosplay in (or who you cosplay as).

So yeah, "know what works best for you."

[identity profile] tacky-tramp.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I could say "ignore it," but I know it's not that easy. :/ Just remember that assholes' behavior is about them and their issues, and is not an indicator of anything actually wrong with you.

Word.

[identity profile] redikolous.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
You know what? I think if you cosplay in a flattering outfit (like not with belly hanging out like the pic), you'd look just fine. This is coming from an overweight person here. I've had friends who weighed more than most people and they cosplayed just fine and looked good doing it. The person in the pic, well, it's not flattering, and it's be hard for a person who weighed less to pull it off nicely.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-30 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
If it makes you feel any better, that particular cosplayer is a real creeper anyway. He tends to follow people around and act all around jerky and high and mighty. And, yes. He. That is a man.

[identity profile] lady-agrias.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
The OP of that secret is a douchebag, so please don't let it get you down. Notice how they conveniently used a bad picture, and didn't bother to include a picture of GOOD plus-sized cosplay. :/ These secrets used to take their toll on my self-esteem as well, but cosplay just isn't srs bsnss. I'm overweight, I cosplay, and I have a ton of fun making and wearing my costumes.

Also, you get awesome points for your icon. :3

(Anonymous) 2008-10-31 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Way to blame someone else for your own problems?

[identity profile] carbonatedh2o.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I blame myself for having poor self esteem, but society's hatred of the overweight doesn't help it.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you're right. Self-esteem has absolutely nothing to do with how other people treat and look at you!

[identity profile] hp99999.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
OP is the idea originator therefore originator of the problem; way to blame someone else for the consequences of others actions?

(Anonymous) 2008-10-31 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
This probably won't help because it comes from an anonymouse, but I haven't ever dated a girl under 200lb. Thin chicks don't turn me on at all.

[identity profile] sailorneptune.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
You know what they say... if you're bigger, you can lose the weight, but once a bitch, ...

They're just miserable in their own lives so they make fun of other people to make themselves feel better (sounds like something your mother would say but hey, I realized it was true).

And they say "sorry if this is you" in the same breath as "fat people should never cosplay" and "making my eyes bleed" and "you're embarrassing yourself". Like anyone is actually going to believe they're sorry for using the picture. Dumbass.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-31 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Then go do something about it then whine on the internet about people being mean. If you're fat you should lose weight to save your health.

Also, it doesn't matter if people have a wonderful personality and are a great person. If you have rolls of fat spilling out over badly fitting clothes it's still revolting. I've seen overweight cosplayers who wear flattering cosplays and look fabulous in them. There's a big difference between wearing clothes you look good in and clothes which make you look awful. This applies to any body shape, fat or thin. It's only the overweight people that get the stick though...

[identity profile] carbonatedh2o.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I am working on my self esteem, thank you very much. I'm in therapy and on medication; I've done everything I can think of. I'm sorry, I'm not allowed to "whine" about it when that's what all the secrets on fandom!secrets consist of? Well excuse me.

Maybe, perhaps, I have a medical condition that makes it extremely difficult to lose weight? Have you ever thought of that? No, to you and everyone else, all it is is "just lose the weight". It's not that simple, sweetie. If it were that easy there wouldn't be any overweight people in America.

And your definition of "revolting" could look fine to someone else. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

anon2

(Anonymous) 2008-11-01 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing in life is easy. That's like trying to say no one should aspire to be or do anything in case they run into complications. Everyone needs discipline. Believe it or not, it really is that simple. And I really hate the "medical condition" excuse people throw around, as if we're assholes for thinking people are fat because they don't have any control over their habits. In my experience (and I've had a lot of it, trust me even though I'm anonymous), a good majority of AMERICANS are fat because they make extremely poor choices regarding their health. I am aware of the biological reasons behind a person being more prone to obesity. Regardless, of the many, many overweight people I've come across very few of them actually have those kinds of legitimate "excuses". Those people ruined it for the minority.

Personally, the only kind of overweight people I always consider unattractive are the OBESE. I think chubby can be cute - unhealthy, but cute. Anything over "chubby"... No. In any case, please dress appropriately. That's what the anon was saying before me. And if you can find someone that truly doesn't find the rolls upon rolls of fat spilling out of extremely tight clothing, I will give you a gold star.

[identity profile] hp99999.livejournal.com 2008-11-01 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
There are people with conditions making it hard to lose weight; particularly since doctors tend to ignore those problems in preference of telling them it is their fault. There is more than one way to have a physical failure in your body not of your own causing that makes you gain weight and many doctors will refuse to even look into it for patients, laying all the blame on them. It is a little hard to fight a failing body without curing it first and there are many people not even aware that they may have a physical problem as a reason.

Frankly being fat does not necessarily have to be unhealthy; you can be fat and be healthy. Automatically assuming someone with extra weight is unhealthy is just another excuse to make them feel bad about themselves and a misconception. It can lead to health problems, but it does not necessarily have to nor does it always.

Every case of overweight and underweight is individual to that person with numerous factors and generalizing those not of preferred weight under "the person is a slob who eats wrong and does nothing, but sit in front of electronics all day" or something is wrong. You may know several people like that, or you may not, but that does not extend to every overweight person on the planet.

Far as the OP, they were not saying dress appropriately, they were saying don't dress up and by extension that the OP frankly does not care to look at overweight people and is more than insulted when they dress in something the OP associates with slender.

(Anonymous) 2008-11-01 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, but you're being too vague for me. What conditions are you talking about? Environmental? Psychological? What "physical failures"? And I don't understand at all what you mean by "fighting a failing body."

Also, I'll agree with you that fat isn't necessarily bad all the time. But again, when I talk about being fat, I mean really fat. Maybe you're talking about the chubby I mentioned earlier? I don't claim to be an expert on health issues like obesity and I highly doubt you are one either, but I know having too much fat in certain areas of your body are worse than others. Just like being too skinny can have its consequences. Granted that wasn't either of our arguments... When I see bulging stomachs - especially in clothes that are a million sizes too small - I know they are not 100% healthy. I'm not going to argue about individual cases here because, frankly, who cares. We can talk in circles about this for days. In any case, calling someone unhealthy is not an excuse to make them feel bad. Just because something isn't immediately life threatening doesn't make it okay. My bad habits from today are my problems of tomorrow. Or whatever that saying is supposed to be like.

Also, I realize what the OP's message was. I disagree with it (people should be entitled to do whatever the hell they want (to an extent)). I was talking about the anon who posted immediately before me. The one who said, "There's a big difference between wearing clothes you look good in and clothes which make you look awful." That's the point I was agreeing with. Even if you're fat and you're okay with it, you will not look good in certain outfits that ARE made for someone who is more slender. It's a pet peeve of mine, when people try to pretend they are something they are not. Fat people are not skinny. That's the (redundant) bottomline.

[identity profile] hp99999.livejournal.com 2008-11-01 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
Well if you consider the word physical in conjunction with in and body... Which would probably exclude half the things you said... There are people who lack enough or have excess of certain chemicals that can contribute to their weight paritcularly, as well as not all of a person's organs may function correctly or at a necessary capacity. I'm sure there's other bodily reasons, but those are some. And if you have a problem such as, say, with your thyroid gland, doctors can be very hateful about diagnosing you--even if you are aware that it might just be that (which many people would not be). Most people actually aren't born healthy, be it in mind or body--there's a lot more people off the "perfectly healthy" meter than there are those on it. That doesn't mean a large majority have it to such an impairing effect they're practically screwed, but it is still a fairly big factor.

Again, it may not be bad habits. And even if it is, a "bad habit" isn't necessarily something life threatening. It can be, but it doesn't have to be. An obsession maybe, but a habit, no. There are very few "100% healthy" people in this world. Being fat is just one of the easier, visable things, that might indicate someone has something seriously wrong like clogged arteries or some such. Might. Telling every fat person they're unhealthy based on this is ridiculous in my opinion. If the person is overweight to the point where it is blatantly obvious to be impairing them(such as poor mobility), I don't think it needs to be pointed out. They know. And they are either struggling to do something about it with whatever conditions that brought them to that point or they don't care. Also because a person is overweight doesn't mean they are continually gaining more and more weight everyday and never decreasing--they may in fact be very stable at that weight.

Isn't cosplaying pretending to be something you're not? I can understand not wanting to look at a certain aspect of someone and preferring it if they dress in a way that does not draw attention to it/accent it, but I don't think it should be a demand. I don't particularly enjoy seeing a skinny person who looks like a slob, but that's their freedom to do so. Same for overweight people. There are places that demand you meet a certain level of aesthetic pleasing (restaurants for example), but general public is general public. Long as no one's running around absolutely naked it is allowed by the law (at least in my country and some various others).

(Anonymous) 2008-11-02 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
my two pence: i don't think you should even have to explain yourself to some anonymous asshole! don't feel bad, get ANGRY! there's no excuse for people talking to you like that because they think you should look different. the "omg umhealthyz!" is just fake concern, in my opinion. (i bet they don't zoom about lecturing skinny folk who are on amazingly unhealthy diet regimes. it's not about health, it's about demanding everyone - especially women - fits into a rigidly defined box and policing other people's bodies. and it's pathetic.)

so, fuck 'em! you are FINE. i hope you get to a place where you feel good about yourself - there is NOTHING about being fat that makes you an unworthy person or somehow deserving of mockery or a lecture about Bad Health Choices from someone who knows zero about you and your medical history.

*hugs*

I used to be over 300 pounds. I know the feeling.

Personally, I just say cosplay the characters that you a.) like and/or b.) bear some sort of resemblance to.

[personal profile] nenya_kanadka 2008-11-19 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. It's a really shitty sort of thing for someone to fandomsecret about. :(

FWIW, I think any person of any size can cosplay well, if they know what they're doing. It's more about being good at costume design and knowing how it will look on you, than about size. (I have a plus-sized friend who looks totally awesome in all the costumes I've ever seen pictures of her in.)
