Thank you so much for worrying about fat people. I mean, if you don't, who will? It's not like anyone else ever speaks out about the dangers of being fat and everybody knows that fatties can't take care of themselves.

[identity profile] boogabooga-xx.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
...Sorry for giving a shit about people.

And considering the rate of obesity in America, people *cant* take care of themselves.

Anorexia is a problem as well.

Forgive me for giving a shit.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
What do you think your concern accomplishes?

Listen, "I care about fat people - they're all unhealthy!" is a really, really common statement. Moreover, it's a really common excuse to shame people about their bodies and refuse to listen to what people have to say about their own bodies.

If you give a shit about health, give a shit about people's health instead of just generalizing it to fat people, who may or may not be unhealthy.

Also, the rate of obesity in America has a lot to do with new definitons of "obese."

[identity profile] boogabooga-xx.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Did you miss where I said anorexia is a problem as well?

I care about EVERYONE's health.

And not all fat people are 'obese'. I worry about the extremes in people. Both fat and skinny.

I understand that genetics, glands, thyroids--those all attribute to fat sometimes--I know it isn't always laziness.

Check your assumptions

Yeah: And you should be worried about everyone and stop assuming that you can diagnose a person's health just by looking at their body.

I understand that genetics, glands, thyroids--those all attribute to fat sometimes--I know it isn't always laziness.

Ok, great. But I thought you were worried about health and not laziness? Or are all lazy people also unhealthy enough to deserve your pity?

Re: Check your assumptions

[identity profile] boogabooga-xx.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
1) Thank you for telling me what to think! Gee!

2) Many people assume that fat people = lazy. I was conceding that that isn't the case always.

And I said I don't fucking PITY them.

Whatever. You aren't going to acknowledge any of my points.

Re: Check your assumptions

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
You don't have any points for me to acknowledge. Do you just want me to admit you're the mother theresa of fat people and move on?

Why not? Someone has to take the burger out of their mouth! :D

Is it that different from worrying about someone smoking? Even if they are perfectly heathy otherwise (even more than me), is it somehow wrong for me to be concerned? I'd say our society has too much apathy if you ask me.

Re: Check your assumptions

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Smoking causes lung cancer, being fat does not. I'd say it's pretty different.

Re: Check your assumptions

(Anonymous) 2008-10-31 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Because being fat doesn't lead to health problems at all.

Re: Check your assumptions

[identity profile] end-of-the-mind.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
I was gonna say.... O.o

Even 30 pounds overweight tends to causes increases in the risk of all kinds of diseases (and I'm near that mark right now -.-)

Re: Check your assumptions

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Alright, let me put it another way..

"Fat" isn't something you do. You can go up to a person who is smoking and say "You should stop your smoking because it will cause lung cancer!" It's not quite the same thing to walk up to a fat person and say "Stop being fat or you will get sick!"

Re: Check your assumptions

(Anonymous) 2008-11-01 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
You're a bit of a stubborn moron, aren't you? Even losing a few pounds reduces risks of certain diseases.

Re: Check your assumptions

(Anonymous) 2008-10-31 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, any person who's very large has health problems of some sort, dear. I'd like you to find me an overweight person who doesn't.

Re: Check your assumptions

[identity profile] delfeus.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
Being fat often equals e.g. heart problems, though. My father was fat and died of a heart attack when he was 45. I'm fat and won't be surprised if I go the same way. I just prefer living comfortably for what time I have to panicking about my weight. Even if I was normal weight and completely healthy, I could still get killed by a drunk driver or something, so I just prefer to live in a way that makes me comfortable, no matter what others think of it.

Re: Check your assumptions

(Anonymous) 2008-10-31 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
The question I would raise is, what good is your 'concern' doing any of these theoretical people? Are you spotting your best friend at the gym, or making steamed veggies to take to your potluck - or are you sitting around saying FAT PEOPLE ARE SO DEPRESSING DON'T BE FAT YOU FATTIES? Don't kid yourself, the world has a lot of people who are 'concerned' about fat people. Generally they are concerned with them not being eyesores to depress the thin folk.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-31 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
What do you think your concern accomplishes?

IAWTC. I've heard from a lot of people that they are 'concerned' about my health because I am fat. My response is "great - so what are you going to do to help me improve it?" Are you going to pay for my gym membership? Are you going to be my personal trainer? Are you going to be my doctor? In which case you'd also learn that I'm in excellent cardiovascular and muscular health,

[identity profile] skymeetssea.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
The problem is that unfortunately, a lot of people claim they are 'concerned' about fat people's health in a very lip service-y way, when the underlying meaning is "YOU SHOULD FEEL ASHAMED OF YOURSELF, YOU'RE DIGGING YOUR OWN GRAVE". I don't know you or your circumstance, so I'm not going to claim I know your intent. If you want to look at the source of obesity in America though, you might look at a number of factors outside of simple personal choice - the fact that Americans work long hours, many at sedentary jobs; the fact that many American cities are laid out in such a way that makes walking or biking to work unsafe or impossible; the fact that health care, fresh fruits and vegetables, and gym access are often priced too high for lower income households. If we want to be concerned about our civilization's overall health, we can look at donating money toward building more bike paths, or supporting local farmer's markets, etc etc.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
This. Thank you.
