153. I have no problem with fat people wearing appropriate clothing.

I do, however, worry about their health. It just depresses me.

[identity profile] jukebox-hero.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
There are plenty of skinny people who aren't healthy (meth addicts, anyone?). Do you look at a thin person and worry about their health?

[identity profile] boogabooga-xx.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Very skinny people, yes. And I only really worry about really fat people.

Extreemes in any form are bad.

Plenty of people are overweight and healthy. "Fat" doesn't always mean morbidly obese. There are plenty of people who don't fall into the skinny category that just aren't ever going to lose a ton of weight because of their particular genetics.

[identity profile] boogabooga-xx.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I know that.

But being overweight is really never healthy. Ever. But you can be more healthy cardiovasularily if you work out than a skinny person who doesn't.

And I understand the genetics argument. It is really hard. I have a thyroid condition that keeps me from losing weight easily, but I control what I eat religiously, take my meds, and work out like a mutherfucker. Its rough, but it keeps me healthy and slim.

I know it doesn't work for everyone, but in my experience, 9 times out of 10 overweight does not =/= healthy.

[identity profile] delfeus.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
Is being slim really worth all that trouble? Sounds like worrying about weight issues takes up a lot of your time. Well, each to their own. I personally prefer being fat and devoting my time to other things, though. I have enough to worry about without adding my weight to the mix.

(Anonymous) 2008-11-01 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, you've convinced me. I think I prefer hypertension, diabetes, being unable to breathe, and a wide assortment of other heart and health problems over going to the gym on a regular basis too.

not op

(Anonymous) 2008-11-01 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'm fat, and I don't have any of those conditions. My parents were both fat. My father died from something unrelated. My mother doesn't have any of those health problems. My obese great uncle is about to turn eighty, and his only ailment is lung problems from smoking.

So developing a condition/health issue is not a forgone conclusion with regards to fat.

Yeah, gaining weight can cause health problems, but I'm too busy with two jobs to bother with exercise, not to mention exhausted. A gym membership is a luxury I can't afford. I get little enough joy in my life without being able to be eat, be pudgy, and not have to take shit from self-righteous skinny people.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much for worrying about fat people. I mean, if you don't, who will? It's not like anyone else ever speaks out about the dangers of being fat and everybody knows that fatties can't take care of themselves.

[identity profile] boogabooga-xx.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
...Sorry for giving a shit about people.

And considering the rate of obesity in America, people *cant* take care of themselves.

Anorexia is a problem as well.

Forgive me for giving a shit.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
What do you think your concern accomplishes?

Listen, "I care about fat people - they're all unhealthy!" is a really, really common statement. Moreover, it's a really common excuse to shame people about their bodies and refuse to listen to what people have to say about their own bodies.

If you give a shit about health, give a shit about people's health instead of just generalizing it to fat people, who may or may not be unhealthy.

Also, the rate of obesity in America has a lot to do with new definitons of "obese."

[identity profile] boogabooga-xx.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Did you miss where I said anorexia is a problem as well?

I care about EVERYONE's health.

And not all fat people are 'obese'. I worry about the extremes in people. Both fat and skinny.

I understand that genetics, glands, thyroids--those all attribute to fat sometimes--I know it isn't always laziness.

Check your assumptions

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 01:02 am (UTC)(link)

Yeah: And you should be worried about everyone and stop assuming that you can diagnose a person's health just by looking at their body.

I understand that genetics, glands, thyroids--those all attribute to fat sometimes--I know it isn't always laziness.

Ok, great. But I thought you were worried about health and not laziness? Or are all lazy people also unhealthy enough to deserve your pity?

Re: Check your assumptions

[identity profile] boogabooga-xx.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
1) Thank you for telling me what to think! Gee!

2) Many people assume that fat people = lazy. I was conceding that that isn't the case always.

And I said I don't fucking PITY them.

Whatever. You aren't going to acknowledge any of my points.

Re: Check your assumptions

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
You don't have any points for me to acknowledge. Do you just want me to admit you're the mother theresa of fat people and move on?

Is it that different from worrying about someone smoking? Even if they are perfectly heathy otherwise (even more than me), is it somehow wrong for me to be concerned? I'd say our society has too much apathy if you ask me.

What do you think your concern accomplishes?

IAWTC. I've heard from a lot of people that they are 'concerned' about my health because I am fat. My response is "great - so what are you going to do to help me improve it?" Are you going to pay for my gym membership? Are you going to be my personal trainer? Are you going to be my doctor? In which case you'd also learn that I'm in excellent cardiovascular and muscular health,

[identity profile] skymeetssea.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
The problem is that unfortunately, a lot of people claim they are 'concerned' about fat people's health in a very lip service-y way, when the underlying meaning is "YOU SHOULD FEEL ASHAMED OF YOURSELF, YOU'RE DIGGING YOUR OWN GRAVE". I don't know you or your circumstance, so I'm not going to claim I know your intent. If you want to look at the source of obesity in America though, you might look at a number of factors outside of simple personal choice - the fact that Americans work long hours, many at sedentary jobs; the fact that many American cities are laid out in such a way that makes walking or biking to work unsafe or impossible; the fact that health care, fresh fruits and vegetables, and gym access are often priced too high for lower income households. If we want to be concerned about our civilization's overall health, we can look at donating money toward building more bike paths, or supporting local farmer's markets, etc etc.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
This. Thank you.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-31 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
You are so annoying. Go somewhere and shut up.

[identity profile] boogabooga-xx.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Lol if you are who I think you are, ilu, my favorite troll.

[identity profile] carbonatedh2o.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
:\ I understand that you mean well, but most of us are very aware that we have bad health.

Some overweight people, however, are in perfectly good health.

However, the majority of them are in bad health, and most of them are aware of it. It's really not that easy to lose weight.

[identity profile] boogabooga-xx.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I know. I didn't mean for it to sound so harsh really (and I got more defensive as I got more and more annoyed with people).

And it is hard. I have a pretty bad thyroid condition. I have to workout out A LOT, watch what I eat all the time, and take meds the rest of my life to stay slim.

...my body is healthy, but am I happy? Not always.

I don't want to sound heartless, or acting like a bitch or anything. Does that make sense? I apologize for making a generalization when I didn't partiularily mean it.

[identity profile] carbonatedh2o.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no, don't worry about it. I know you meant well. <3

[identity profile] skymeetssea.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
(Responder from above) Then you know that it's difficult to be thin, and that it's not necessarily realistic for everyone.

I agree that the focus should be on health, but unfortunately, that's not something which is easy for outsiders to judge. The reason fat people get so defensive is that it's very very common for others to make snap judgments about their health - and in turn, the value and quality of their lives - based solely on their appearance. We would never do this for any other physical trait. It's true that being fat is correlated with an elevated risk for various diseases. But that's just what it is, a risk factor. Whether or not someone's life is actually being adversely affected by their weight is not something you can tell by looking at them. You also can't tell if that person IS trying to change the situation. A two-hundred pound jogger is laughable until you learn they used to be a FOUR hundred pound jogger, and are literally half the man they used to be. So being depressed by someone's current physical state really doesn't mean a hill of beans.
