I haven't watched The Mandalorian yet, but I can kind of get your mixed feelings about it's success. I sort of feel similarly about Rise of Skywalker. Even though as a fan I genuinely want it to be good, I kind of have this weird feeling about it...where I want it to be good specifically in a way that gives people more context or appreciation to TLJ. Or if not, I want it to be terrible in a way that is much , much worse than TLJ.
Just so people will take a step back and think..."well TLJ admittedly had genuine flaws but maybe I was overreacting a bit by calling for Rian Johnson's neck, sending hate mail to Kelly, and insulting the morality and intelligence of anyone who had positive or neutral feelings about it."

I didn't even like TLJ all that much myself but the antis are so venomous and elitist and outspoken about it that I'm just dying for something to shut them up (or at least make them want to apologize for the way some of them treated Rian Johnson, Kelly Tran, Laura Dern, and Adam Driver) over the movies (admitted) flaws.

Anyone who sends hate to real people over fictional media automatically is terrible and loses any argument. The fandoms that do that are just the worst. At this point I pretty much avoid the Star Wars fandom. I'd rather just enjoy the movies, read the occasional fic, and avoid the hate and the awful fans.

I feel like any kind of engagement with The Star Wars Fandom as a large entity is going to be poisonous. At this point I mostly just want to like what I like and ignore everything else. Even getting resentful about the idiots who hated TLJ is too close to engaging with them and caring about them.

I’m not ambivalent about The Mandalorian’s success yet, but I may well get there with time, depending largely on how many fanboys use the show as an excuse to post ten more screeds about why TLJ is the worst movie ever.

Some of us just want to watch both the series and the movies without the drama.

I want that too, but it pretty much means not being involved wth the fandom at all.

Following the show is being involved in fandom, and it's not hard to cultivate friendships with people who appreciate the shows without doing drama.

Yeah but as soon as they reveal Baby Yoda is a girl, those people will immediately hate it.

I don't get the Mandelorian's success. I mean, it's okay, very competently done, and very pretty, well photographed, and so on. I enjoy the nods to various canon elements, but it's not doing anything for me, if not for the baby yoda, I wouldn't have gone past the second episode. Maybe I'm no longer used to the old-fashnioned storytelling of "he comes to place X, has to do this one thing (get an egg, save a village), nothing changes, the tv series can go on like thing for 10 or 200 more episodes". Or maybe I just find it hard to care for a guy with no face :/

For me? I'm really loving getting to see the universe in the aftermath of the Original Trilogy, getting to explore, expand, and just generally breathe in the 'world' beyond the Skywalker story. The sequel movies are themselves very pretty, but they have little in the way of world building.

I loved how the Mandalorian responded when he was told to report the Imperial remnant to the New Republic (new system is a joke) but you still get the sense that at this point people are hoping that things can get better now that the Empire is gone. I like the rifles and the beskar and all the little things that are added in, and I like the seasoning of the potential plot underlying it all - I hope that the show is a 'slow burn' in terms of resolving the main plot with the Child so that I can more of the exploration.
