In Suikoden V, I was definitely not a fan of Euram Barows' recruitment scene. There are clues he isn't exactly evil, but they're easily missable if you aren't looking for them. And considering how much time he spends trying to fuck with the prince because of some misguided rage (often in hilarious ways), you would think he'd get a halfway decent recruitment scene. Instead, it's 3 steps: 1) Euram blames prince for personal losses, 2) Runs off crying after his sister orders him to stop acting like a little bitch, 3) is 100% normal when you catch up with him and stays that way for the rest of the game. Sure, it's because he was having a conversation with his mom, but we have NO idea what was said. The dude starts off as a complete assclown, and there's no believable transition to what he ends up being.

(I am disappoint... therefore, I fic...)

He never struck me as evil at all because he was played way too much as a cartoonish villain, so I think I predicted he was either going to be a later recruit or get a humiliating exit scene where he disappoints everyone by failing to be either evil enough or good enough.

And I guess I figured character development happening offscreen is inevitable when you have over 100 characters to recruit and it would be boring if they were all totally good people immediately. So at some point you just have to take the telling without the showing in order to not have a million hours of cutscenes.

I get that, but the problem is the amount of time they apparently invested in his story and his actions, only for it to end up like... that. If he was going to change so much, it doesn't make sense to have it happen literally five seconds later. I just don't think they handled it well.

Honestly I think this is just kind of a natural consequence of having 108 separate characters that you have to try and flesh out at least in a minor way within the course of a ~70 hour story. I was satisfied with how they handled most of them, Euram included-- if there's anyone I felt they kind of dropped the ball on, it was Jeane, what with her being a returning character. It felt like they weren't quite sure what to do with her, so her whole plotline kind of stuttered and never really got off the ground.

I don't have a problem with certain characters not being fleshed out. It's when they build up so much and then just... drop the ball.

For example, as much as I'd wished they did more with Richard because he's awesome, I understand he was just one of many fighters in the game. You find out, either early on (if you like to explore castles) or later into the game, that he'd participated in the Sacred Games, and had a pretty good shot at winning if he hadn't been drugged. What you don't find out is that he has a tragic backstory, unless you're willing to kill him off toward the end. But as far as the main story goes, he doesn't really have an impact on it. It makes sense that many things about him remain "optional."

Euram, however, is strongly tied to the main story. He's responsible for events that occur before the game... events that impact the royal family and an entire town. He pulls a few stunts during the game, causing the prince to respond because at least one stunt hinders alliances. Apparently, he's important enough to include a scene where he witnesses his father's murder and is mocked for being an imbecile. Then when it comes time to recruit him... two-second personality makeover. All that buildup... I just think he deserved better. (I know not everyone agrees. Hell, you don't even have to recruit him, so maybe they wrote that scene with that fact in mind. It would certainly explain a lot.)

Sadly, I think Jeane will remain a mystery, unless they publish more Japanese-only material about her.

Ahhh and here I realize the difference when you've been spoiled that he's a recruited Star, and not in the sense of Luc and Yuber becoming Stars at the very end of III. In IV and V every Star is one of your allies, so it meant that I never believed his "badness" from the very start. It was pretty obvious that he was daddy's pawn and not at all good at anything.

Still, you have excellent points. I'm mostly just annoyed that I went through an entire subplot with him and all he is is...SUPPORT? Fuck that. I wanted him to be playable in the fighting sense, him and his weak li'l rapier. I wanted to level him up into someone actually semi competent and way more interesting to have in the party than goddamn Cornelio, but noooooo support only.
