I definitely agree and would like to add that it's often a fandom-by-fandom and/or ship-by-ship thing.

For me personally, I had a much more pleasant experience writing for the same fandom on FF.net than I have had on AO3.

It helped that this particuar fandom was a lot more gen-friendly and open to multi-shipping/rare pairs on FF.net than the fandom on AO3 which is extremely dominated by explicitly romantic and/or sexual fic for the fandom juggernaut pairing.

The FF. Net people were also much much friendlier and more friendly and accessible--even the BNFs/elder-statespeople--and much more willing to comment on fics, reply to your comment, or even start a deeper, more extensive dialogue with you...whereas on AO3, unless you are a BNF who writes very prolifically and extensively and for the fandom juggernaut pairing... it's rare to get even hits or kudos, let alone actual comments. And that's assuming said comments aren't just "y u no ship fandom juggernaut pairing? all other ships are bad/problematic/boring"
