I just started watching DS9 because of my love for TNG, and I couldn't get through the first episode it was so bad. I'm assuming, like most things, it gets better with time, but when can I expect it to become good, because I would like to jump to that part if possible.

Define "good". if your standard is TNG, it might not be for you. I hated TNG with a passion [save for a few eps and the Borg] and bought DS9 as a box set to watch and re-watch again.That said the first ep not the best intro. As it is much less episodic than TNG it's hard to say "dip in here" but try 'Duet'. Stellar performances and dramatic meat.
