Because "objectively" and "art" don't really go together.

Exactly. DS9 is my favorite Trek series, but I think which is the best is a matter of personal opinion mostly.

well, I assume it's because not everyone likes "long complex storylines" more than "uplifting allegory you can enjoy in a single sitting" or "shenanigans". Or whatever else.

Just because DS9 has a lot of things going for it doesn't mean that those things are "objectively" more valuable to everyone. And I say this as someone who does generally like DS9 more than the other series.

Long-running stories aren’t “objectively” better, and Star Trek generally hits some of the most engaging case-of-the-week writing I can think of when I like it best. DS9 did some of both really well though.

I like DS9 but...in one word, "allameraine"

(or however the fuck you spell it idc)

... still, that episode laid down some delightful early Quark characterization, and great Quark and Odo interaction.

(And seriously, Fallow was a hoot.)

I should probably be admitting it anonymously... but I actually really liked that episode. :P

I agree with other comments that "objectively" isn't a word that can be applied to any estimation of artistic quality. In my opinion "objective" is related to facts; facts can be correct or incorrect. (Such as whether DS9 was more diverse for its time.)

Subjectively? I adore DS9 above all other Treks, because to me, for every criteria I apply, it's superior by a large margin, but I can accept that others might have reasons to have a different opinion. (Primarily because I know people who adore TNG, for example. I do not, but I would not tell people who love it that they are "wrong." People love what they love.)

I think DS9 is best, and I think it's fairly clear even if it's ultimately subjective, but I shouldn't like to reduce it to a question of length of storyline

Well, I agree.

I'll agree with you on considering it to be the best of the Trek TV shows, but I'm not sure I'd say it's objectively the best as it also had some wonky episodes as well all TV shows are liable to have.

And tbh if someone's fave Trek is Voyager(which I largely don't like all of) I'm not going to argue with them on it because they can have their opinion, even if I'll disagree with them.

I agree. People are nitpicking on the dictionary definition when you mean objectively in the colloquial sense.

I will say DS9 kind of grew on me after I had a few years of separation between it and TNG. The almost eerily prescient plotlines really resonated, as well.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-14 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I love TNG and DS9 equally well. They are apples and oranges. They each give me things and satisfy my in different ways and I can't choose between them overall, only in terms of what I'm in the mood for at the moment.

We'll just have to agree to disagree here, anon, because I found the longer plotlines tedious (and Babylon 5 did it way, way better). TNG is my favorite Trek.

I thought it was incredibly boring.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-14 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
While I technically agree, there's a difference between 'better' and 'favourite.' A lot of my favourite shows are not technically good, but I enjoy them more than shows that are objectively better.

And Enterprise is my second favourite Trek, despite growing up on TNG.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-14 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked it up to a certain point. There were a lot of flaws and ideals that deviated from what I like to associate with Star Trek. The episode where Nog asks Sisco to sponsor him so he can join Starfleet is particularly against what I love about Star Trek. Literally only because he's Ferengi Sisco won't even consider doing it, he has to be convinced tenfold just to think, 'well maybe Nog's not your typical Ferengi', which is beyond backwards.
(also the episode with Worf and his brother, Sisco literally says something along the lines of 'having enough of respecting other peoples cultures')

Mine too, for the exact same reasons. I adore the characters and the storylines.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-15 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I strongly disagree. I found it very boring compared to TOS, TNG, and Voyager. I ranked DS9 as the worst tv Trek until Enterprise came along.

I mean, it probably depends on what you actually want out of your Trek? DS9 and TOS are my favourites, DS9 for the engaging plots and moral greys, TOS for the characters and the crazy and the OG exploration. I also loved the earlier parts of ENT for the exploration of the Vulcan/Andorian dynamic, but hated the Xindi war.

Each of them have different strengths. DS9 is excellent for exploring the long-term impact of the Federation on an area, and for long-term conflicts in the Trek universe, but it's also largely stationary, so if you came to Trek for the exploration it's not your best choice, and it also usually takes more of a serious, darker tone, so if you came for a higher 'whacky shenanigans' quota along with your ethical/moral conundrums, you might want to pick something else as well. So I think it depends on what you want in your Trek.

I just started watching DS9 because of my love for TNG, and I couldn't get through the first episode it was so bad. I'm assuming, like most things, it gets better with time, but when can I expect it to become good, because I would like to jump to that part if possible.

it's a brilliant show, for sure

but it's not brilliant star trek

Correct.
