Dumb Question for Writers

(Anonymous) 2019-12-17 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Okay so I'm probably going to get yelled/laughed at for this question but this came from a sorta unexpectedly fun writer's group discussion.

Writers, what's a thing you know is kind of considered a typical "Mary Sue trait" but damn do you have a weakness for it?

I like it when a character can make another character stop being a dick by being nice to them

Oh goddammit, lol. I have S-U-C-H a thing for obnoxiously over-intelligent/over-capable small children.

I also (sorry, I'm trash) but I adore when the Sue can't cook. It just pleases me so much.

I like to describe characters outfits and accessories. I try to weave it into the text rather than just write a laundry list. But it is fun for me to give characters a cool outfit from time to time.

I wish more writers had physical descriptions for their original characters. I actually want to draw art four a few fics I really like, but there's no descriptions of the main character, and I'm just flailing in the dark :(

If you contacted the author, I bet they'd tell you. Because fuck knows i'd be over the moon if an artist wanted to draw one of my OC's.

Logically I know that - but I'm worried that I'll ask and then never finish it, and I'll never escape the guilt!

Maybe phrase it as a 'i'm going to try and do a little sketch of this OC of yours i like, but i may not be able to finish.....'

Nobody's gonna hate on you for giving it a go, and don't make any promises to anybody and you should be good. :D

I really love a certain amount of "character is better than everyone else at thing(s)." It can be taken too far sometimes, of course. Like, please don't make a character the best secret, undiscovered mathematician the world has ever known. But I like when they're very, very good at something and nobody expects them to be. I also don't mind if they're surprisingly good at a lot of things - as long as they're not The Absolute Best At Everything Ever.

This seems to be one of those tropes that's only a Mary Sue thing if the character is female. If the character is male, it's not a Mary Sue thing, they're simply the male lead in a story.

I have a weakness for writing characters as very good at something unexpected for that character. I like a somewhat socially inept person being very good with children, a somewhat clumsy person being very good at a specific athletic thing (dancing, gymnastics, swimming, or running, etc.), an otherwise average or indifferent student being really into some specific intellectual pursuit (coding, math, engineering, science, economics, etc.), a relatively undomestic person being really good at a specific household skill (cooking, laundry, handiwork, etc.), all of which I've seen real world examples of, but, well, characters have to make more sense than people.

Also, magic-wise, I really like to make a character different from all the other magic-users, in strength or abilities or both.

Not being bowled-over-impressed by the very!special!person!! they meet. Not, like - totally blase and 'ho hum, that guy just picked up a car, who cares' but not going to pieces and loosing their shit in a 'omg, i'm going crazy!!!!' sort of way.

So many!

* unusual hair/eye color
* really good at something cool
* everyone falls in love with them
* clever, funny, always has a good comeback

I'm anti-Mary Sue, in that I don't think it's a useful way to talk about characters anymore.
