Now since I have absolutely zero faith that the GOP-led Senate will grow a spine or a conscience and do the right thing, let's hope that their shitty behavior throughout this entire thing comes back to bite them in the ass HARD next November.

I hope so but I won't hold my breath. Seems like the world is just going to shit. Hopefully the Dems can get their shit together and nominate someone good.

About 90% of the time, I don't think there is any saving the GOP. The orange idiot has spent too much time smearing his feces all over the walls and floors of the ship they know and made it uninhabitable. If they want to survive as a party, I think they all need to jump overboard and build a new ship. And do some soul-searching for Christ's sake.

The deeper problem is that the Republicans don't want to jump overboard; this is what they want. At least, by all accounts, it's what the party's base voters want, and the rest of the party will spinelessly accommodate itself to those wishes. It's certainly untenable for anyone with spine or spirit or morals but that's demonstrably not really what the majority of the party structure and supporters are thinking of. They're on board for all of this.

Of course it might be difficult over the long term, but they do have a few advantages in their corner - huge amounts of money, unshakable support from the people who are in their base, a structural bias in American political systems that gives more power to their base, and the impossibility of creating a real third party in the American political system that could threaten or supplant them.

Congressional Republicans will sell their souls to the devil to destroy half of the government agencies, render the Voting Rights Act unenforceable, pack the court system, and get out of international partnerships. Which is what they got from Trump.

Twitter tells me this isn't enough, that he isn't removed unless the senate votes him out as well? And that he can still run in 2020 if they don't vote him out?

Yep. It's intentionally very hard to impeach someone. The House really just makes a formal accusation, and then the Senate tries him. And the Senate almost certainly won't actually vote him out, because there's far too many Republicans who know that they'll lose a primary and have to retire from politics if they vote to convict.

But still, he's guilty as sin.

It seems stupid until you remember that the U.S. is super extra when given an inch and every President would go under an impeachment process if it wasn't difficult and a huge political risk.

And to be fair, I don't think the Founding Fathers really envisaged a scenario where someone would be clearly guilty of impeachable offenses and his own political party would just decide to let it slide

Impeachment is a whole process. First it is investigated and then the House votes on articles of impeachment (simple majority), then the Senate puts the accused on trial, then there is a vote whether to convict (supermajority). The result of conviction is removal from office. Clinton was acquitted, Johnson was acquitted (because the vote to convict was one short of a two-thirds majority). Nixon resigned and the impeachment process against him was closed before it went to a full House vote. No US President has yet been removed from office by an impeachment, though Nixon probably would have been.

So, at least 67 Senators have to vote to convict - assuming all the Democrats (45) and Independents (2) vote to convict, at least 20 Republicans would also have to vote to convict. To me, it does not seem that likely to happen, right now.

At least those will smell better than him.

As others have said, I know with 99.9% certainty the Senate won't actually remove him from office, but at least now in the history books he'll have joined the ranks of the impeached.

Though I wish my Mom wasn't asleep right now so I could warn her my Dad is going to be in a foul mood for a while. He's a huge Trump supporter (and I'm glad I have my own place so I don't have to deal with it).

Good luck to her! I'm having to tread lightly myself since my boss is super conservative, and I'm sure Christmas will be fun with my Trump-lover sister and nephew...
