124. You don't have to like the protagonist to enjoy/be interested in the story as told through his/her eyes. I mean, look at A Clockwork Orange. Harry has always been sort of "eh" for me (I did like him far better as a character when he was a pre-adolescent), but so what? The story interests me and there are other characters I adore.

135. I saw this movie in the theater when I was Twelve. Hearing Ewan McGregor sing "Your Song" gave me the first romantic stirring of my life and cemented my first huge crush. I will gladly take that moment over your respect.

It also, in a strange way, is what got me me to start writing. Again, that > your respect.

Honestly:

Musical
n. A play or movie that contains musical numbers.

It does. And the musical numbers advance the plot. Just because it isn't an original score doesn't mean it isn't enjoyable (same goes for Across The Universe). The editing and choreography in The Tango de Roxanne still gives me chills.

I mean, whatever. At least it got musicals back into theaters. Of course, I have the feeling you're the "I lose respect for people who came to love a musical by first seeing the movie" type.

Lol, I should've put a line break in there. I meant Harry was eh for me, the reference to Clockwork was just a mid-paragraph example.

That said, I find the character of Alex a lot more interesting than Harry even if Alex is just downright despicable.

AH OKAY wow my brain like. Fizzed out. I totally forgot the original secret was about Harry Potter in my excitement in seeing Clockwork Orange mentioned. XDD

And yes! Alex was horrible, though that only made me love him more for how he'd changed by the end of the book. I do like Harry, but almost none of the characters in Harry Potter stood out spectacularly for me -- my favorite was probably Lupin, and that's because he hit a character type I like a lot.

I totally agree with you, seriously. It's possible to like a lot about a book and feel little to nothing about the main character, or even dislike them. A more classic example across the board might be Catcher In The Rye, where it was... kinda impossible to care too much about the main character, but the story itself fascinated me even if Holden was ajksfhaklfjgak argh (I didn't hate him but MAN DO SOMETHING. ANYTHING. XD)

It's just. The soft-spoken likeable friendly bookish professor. And then he turned out to be hiding the Dark Secret that he is Dangerous (werewolffff) and that's just another character trait that just makes me love. |D So yeah he pressed all my buttons.

Hahaha, I can't even call him a dick. He just. Did nothing. He was lazy and self-centered to the point that it was offensive, though, definitely. Though I kinda liked him by the point he was talking about his dreams (catcher in the rye for the kids~) even if it didn't make total sense to me. He was... kinda sweet inside? JUST SO LAME.

And yeah, I found him more interesting than Harry, after the first few books anyway. Though I don't dislike Harry at all. XD

Which is why I do think Holden has a fantastic characterization even if I don't like him. He is the very picture of a jaded, seventeen-year-old boy. XD

It's not that I dislike Harry (I mean, I've cared about what happens to him)... he just...irritates me a lot of the time. With his broody, teenage crap and The Chest Monster of Adolescence and some of the remarkably DURRRR things he does. All of which I often excuse since he is a teenage boy with, let's face it, quite a bit to be broody about. Still, that doesn't mean he can't annoy the hell out of me now and then.
