i sometimes find myself falling into a mindset like this and then snap myself out of it when i realize that - for me, personally, at least - it's what happens to me when i get overwhelmed trying to be that "i'm not here to step on any toes!" queer. like a comically overly "polite" response to the sort of "okay fine, exist, but stop shoving it in our face!" kind of homophobes, if you will. so i mean i get where you are coming from, even if you're coming at it from a different place than i am describing.

so that being said, i do absolutely wish to respect all those that came before me who made the less than ~loud and proud~ representation even possible. and those kinds of things in media make me happy sometimes. i feel like the world is a more accepting place to be growing up a lesbian than i felt it was when i was a kid even just 10 or 15 years ago, and that's amazing! but it doesn't mean we don't still have a ways to go, for kids growing up like i did as well as for kids growing up in worse situations that i can't relate to. and media representation is only one aspect of that, for sure. but i am still rooting for normalizing lgbtq characters and storylines in media to a fuller extent than we've seen.

There's also this thing going on where LGBTQ fans are good enough for secondary media (comics, novelizations, games, streaming or second-tier TV), but not for anything with a big budget.

And even there, while Marvel and DC have LGBTQ characters in their comics lineup, many of those characters have spent more time in production limbo than in print.
