This is one thing that I have never gotten. It's ALWAYS been true that a Jedi could be anyone, regardless of parentage. Obi-Wan was nobody. Yoda was nobody. Pretty much all the Jedi in the prequels were nobodies. Even if he was the Chosen One, Anakin was still a slave from basically the end of nowhere.

And if you expand outside of the movies, Ezra and Ahsoka aren't from any great lineages and they're the heroes of their shows. It's already been established that anyone could be strong in the Force. I have never agreed that Rey being a nobody was some shocking turn for the SW universe.

I think it's probably bc those people aren't leads in the mainline movies. Every hero in the mainline movies have been a 'somebody' tied to the greater evils of the Galaxy (Though I suppose YMMV if you think Anakin was immaculately conceived by Palpatine and the Force / Shimi, otherwise Anakin goes from Nobody to Nightmare).

The main movie heroes have always been related or in some way important by their bloodlines. Anakin was conceived by the Force with no father. Luke and Leia are Anakin and Padme's kids and therefore the children of Vader. Having Rey not be related to anyone as the main hero of the new trilogy was different and was a good thing.

I don't think Anakin counts as a hero for Revenge of the Sith, if anyone, that would be Obi-Wan. And I'm not sure I would even call Anakin a main character in The Phantom Menace, while he is a hero in that movie and important to the plot, the movie has a lot of focus on Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan as the heroes. Yes, the overarching story for both the original and prequel trilogies is about Skywalkers.

I'd call him the hero of Revenge of the Sith in the same way that Oedipus is the hero of Oedipus Rex, or Hamlet is the hero of hamlet. Tragic heroes, flawed and failing and doomed, but it's their story. If you want to say that Anakin's fall makes him the protagonist rather than the hero, that's fine, but it doesn't make the nearest non-evil character into the hero. Obi-wan is a secondary character. An important one, but not really significant enough to be a deuteragonist, and not the Hero.

Yes, Anakin is the protagonist, a tragic one, but not a hero. The story being about him does not make him the hero. And supporting characters can be the heroes of the story, even if it doesn't happen very often, but in this case I wasn't entirely sure if there was any real hero.

tbh I just think the word "hero" is pretty flexible colloquially even if it's more specifically contrasted with protagonist in literary analysis, and that the Tragic Hero archetype is very much an applicable one that does go under that name. 'Hero' can be a broader or narrower thing in different contexts. And Anakin is even set up as the Chosen One - that's a very Heroic Marker even though it gets subverted by tragedy and failure.

It's different but I'd say it's a neutral thing.

It's not so much her force power, as the combination of her extremely high force power and her narrative agency in a mainline Star Wars movie

Amen. I always thought it was gross how people focused on Rey's lineage and now TROS has validated that in the most lazy way possible.

I saw one criticism that said "so the Skywalkers all die out with Leia and Ben but the Skywalker name is then adopted by...a Palpatine. Sure SW fans will love that!" and I think that's a good point. I know the whole point of the TROS is blood doesn't matter, but somehow it still feels like a slap in the face? Idk.

I was just relieved she wasn't a Skywalker.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-28 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'm okay with it from the perspective that this was a nine-movie saga about multiple generations of a family and their interactions with/struggle against Palpatine.

Mind you, it still would have worked fine if Rey had been a nobody who happens to play a major role in the latter part of the saga of the Skywalker family and their struggle against Palpatine and thus becomes a somebody in the process (Han was a nobody who got significantly involved, for example, and only got a backstory retroactively). It even could have ended the same with Rey adopting the Skywalker name.

Still, if I view the nine movies as the Skywalker vs Palpatine saga and not the alpha and omega of the entire Star Wars universe and lore of the Force, then I think it works thematically for Rey to be a Palpatine.

Yes but she still made a choice to be a Jedi. It was her choice that made all the difference regardless of what her family origin was. That was the point.
