I'd say that his ambition takes first precedence. It really helps that he loathes Kylo, but he also CAN'T ADVANCE with Kylo in charge. For someone as power hungry as Hux... Kylo's got to go! And sometimes you gotta throw out the First Order with the bathwater.

I haven't read all the EU material, but I thought the FO was more of his father's baby, and Hux hates his dad. I can see him turning the instant it's no longer working for him.

Personally never got the fandom's Hux fixation after TLJ made him a totally different character but this film was such a wtf moment for Hux everyone in my theatre laughed. And in that "I don't believe it" not that it's a shocking twist kind of way.

Lol most of us never even attempted to make him into a noble anything. Most of us are very aware he's an asshole but that's what's fun about it. There is supplementary material to work with and if you're seriously surprised at people latching onto foeyay ships I don't know where you've been the last 40 years of fandom.

i think most of us just find it absolutely hilarious that ya'll have latched onto this piece of cardboard and are aggrieved that the movies didn't do anything with a character who's always been nothing more than a narrative prop who yells a lot.

you guys really are the coulson, clint/coulson stans of star wars, but hey at least in this instance your ridiculous love of a pointless side-character hasn't yielded a spin-off show. so, small mercies.

I don't care for Hux, but I've read enough of the tie-in material to know that your post is spot on. Hux hates the Resistance far more than Kylo Ren and would never work with them.

Luckily, none of Hux’s character development was in the movies. Since most of the audience didn’t feel the need to do homework in order to watch a bunch of space adventure flicks, his “twist” wasn’t out of what little character Hux had been given.

I mean...it's also pretty spelled out in TFA when he blows up the New Republic, the sponsor of the Resistance. I was (clumsily) referencing that nothing had changed in regards to his feelings between TFA and TROS.

The tie-in material is still canon. And, as someone referenced below, in TFA he still pretty clearly hates the Resistance and the New Republic more than he hates anything else.
