I think he only wears it when he's talking to Palpatine, that he was using it to'play a part'.

I have only seen it once, though, so I'll have to watch again to be sure.

He was maskless when he talked to Palpatine. Then the Knights of Ren come in and the mask comes back. He talks to the First Order brass and Rey while wearing it.

For Galaxy's Edge. The rumor that I've heard is that Adam Driver didn't give up his likeness rights for the theme park, so they needed to reforge the mask to have Kylo Ren.

And I can't imagine it'd be easy to find a guy who looks like Adam Driver, lol. When Kylo has his mask on all you really need is a big, tall dude.

It’s taking back ownership of his identity and destiny before he turns and regains his identity as Ben Solo. He likes the mask as a symbol of power.

I thought this was really odd too. My theory was that someone had just read about kintsugi and was like "!! Let's incorporate this somewhere in the movie!!"
