Uuuuh, isn't a lot of shipping predominately women?

(Anonymous) 2019-12-31 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, and most shipping is becoming heavily scrutinized to make sure it's healthy enough and is shipped for the right reasons, which "it's hot" isn't.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-31 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-31 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

It could be.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-31 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yep! With a big bonus assumption that everything those women do must either be somehow improving for them, or for someone else's benefit. Hence the heavy emphasis on liking the right things for the morally correct reasons, and ticking all the moral correctness boxes for what must be included in all the fic they write.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-31 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I would also say there's a strong component of morality policing - this conviction that if you like a pairing that could be called abusive (whether or not that would be a reasonable description), you are somehow contributing to real world attitudes towards abuse.

I think it's more the moral police myself

(Anonymous) 2019-12-31 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I agree, but people here are completely comfortable doing exactly the same thing towards other ships for what appears to be mostly the same reason. We've had plenty of snide remarks and/or outright hatred towards the "Migratory Slash Fandom" in the past that no one seemed to have an issue with, for instance.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-31 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, if you want to ship geese that's your own business.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-31 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
...isn't that exactly what the secret maker is talking about? If women like it, it's bad!

This always feels like the case when women are into darker/gothic romance canons so I can’t imagine it isn’t internalized into fueling ship wars.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-31 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
For me, like... there's a big difference between canon and fandom stuff, here.

I DON'T like canon Reylo. I have a HUGE problem with a relationship that starts out with literal torture becoming a romance, and there's just not enough TIME in the trilogy to really see him earn his redemption-- it can't be one big turnaround, it doesn't feel satisfying or earned or in-character, but there's no time to see him work to earn forgiveness and to undo the harm he's done in the past, and to address the ways he's hurt other people. It's just all about the two of them, there's too much backsliding, like... in a series maybe it would be different and he could have a Zuko-like redemption arc, I'm all for redemption arcs. But this one just feels rushed and thoughtless in so many ways.

I don't look down on women in the fandom who have fun writing fic or making art or just trading headcanons and observations, because fandom activity isn't canon-- and because some of those fans DO write well thought out long-term redemption arcs where he addresses the mistakes and wrongs of his past, not only with Rey but with family, with old friends, with people whose lives he's impacted.

And you know what? I also respect that some fans just want to write smut because it's hot and they don't care about a redemption arc. And that's totally cool!

But the stuff that fans make for themselves and each other is not the same as the things creators release to a wide audience, and I don't judge it the same way.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-31 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
...Didn't he literally try to kill her and brainwash her or something? I can see why multiple women in today's age, when men are STILL trying to control them, have a problem with that.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-31 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
And nobody is saying those women have to ship it. Cool, huh?

(Anonymous) 2019-12-31 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Women can have their opinion on what's problematic.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-31 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Except the third movie made it canon. :( I didn't care for the ship, but I wouldn't have the visceral disgust for it that I possess if it were not actually put into canon material. Especially since Disney has explicitly framed Rey as being a role model for little girls.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-31 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Then clearly it's not for them, is it.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-31 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, but like. You can like it. I can also fucking go, "Hey isn't it a little fucked up that the most popular ship is with the guy who fucking tried to murder and brainwash her instead of, oh, IDK, the numerous men in her life who DIDN'T?"

Your ship is not free from criticism.

Uhm, no to the brainwash thing, yes to the trying yo kill her, but they both tried to kill each other, they were enemies (and it was SHE who killed him in the end, she hurt him way more than he ever hurt her. Why focus on his actions and only his)

Ooh, pretty art! Thanks for featuring it!

(Anonymous) 2019-12-31 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't judge anyone that ships it, i just think it's garbage and boring, but if you want to believe i'm oppressing you for that opinion then by all means continue to wear that victim flag like the self-appointed martyr you are.

but then here in fandom we've turned ppl not liking a ship into an act of Real Oppression, and not just an opinion that has no effect on your life in any way whatsoever.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-31 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I get, like, 99% of the time why people are tired by "morality policing" in shipping, I do. But didn't KR actively threaten to rape Rey? I feel like men weaponizing sexual violence isn't something that leads to romance without, like, a lot of fucking work and thought that SW isn't really engaged in.

...when was this? If you're talking about the infamous "you know I can take whatever I want" line, he was talking about being able to forcibly access all her memories even if she tried to keep something hidden (though admittedly it's unlikely that his choice of phrasing was an accident on the movie's part), and I can't really think of anything else that I read like that.

(not a Reylo ftr, just curious)

pretty art :)
