I find it weird that you said "POC" and not "black people" because as far as I know no other POCs have been referred to that way, but anyway.

Maybe therapy could help? I'm guessing you were raised by racists and because of that it's an almost automatic reaction. I'm not sure there is an easy way to "just stop doing it" but there might be a way a therapist could help you get out of that mindset.

SA

And somehow I missed where you said you don't want to talk to your therapist about it. In that case, I really don't know what to tell you.

I thought the prefered word was POC now I'm sorry. I don't know. My parents are EXTREMELY racist though and my dad uses that word pretty much all the time. I don't want to be racist.

POC just refers to anyone not white, it's okay to say black people (or African American, but most of the black people I know refer to themselves as black rather than African American so that's what I'm in the habit of saying).

Different anon raised by mildly bigoted parents chiming in. Now that you've said that your parents are racist, well, it's not really your fault! Being raised in such an atmosphere, it can take time to unlearn and be de-programmed from what your parents taught you. Even if they didn't directly teach you to be racist you were still around them and absorbed it unwillingly. Don't beat yourself up too much. :)
