Eh.

Hmmm, maybe more tolerant, but MUCH less vitriolic. Example: Relena Peacecraft. There were plenty of fans who called people out on all the hate that character got for getting in the way of the gay, but the sheer hatred for her as a character was WAY worse than anything I can think of that I've seen with a male character of the same type getting in the way of the sapphic vibes.

She was a pretty terrible character though, tbh. Like, she basically had to harass Hero into doing anything with her, like him tearing her birthday invitation apart right in front of her while saying that he hated her, was just as much reason that people didn't like her along with getting into the way of the gay.

So you only watched the first episode. Got it.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Actually, I watched several random episodes, which included the first episode. There was definitely an intense hatred for Relena, but not all of it was unfounded.
First episode or not, it's still a rather intense scene to show how much he initially despised her. The character development can only go so far when it's specifically very one-sided in most every way.

"I wAtChEd SeVeRaL rAnDoM ePiSoDeS"

Nostalgia Critic, is that you?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
You don't understand nonchalance, do you?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
I do. Do you understand mockery?

Nobody has to prove anything to you.

Someone doesn't like what you like. Deal with it.

When did he say he hated her?

All I remember is him saying he'd kill her. Which can happen out of (perceived) necessity, whether or not hatred is present.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Well, when you threaten to kill someone when you first meet someone, that doesn't add much is any romantic value to their relationship.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
True, but your original claim is that he hated her. He did not.

I do not deny she reacted in annoying ways, such as daring her to come get her. But I think Relena haters may have possibly transferred their feelings of hatred for her onto a guy who grew to respect her and eventually went on to rescue her (more than once, actually). Oh, and marry her.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
that should read "daring him to come get her" obviously...

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, but a canon romance doesn't mean it's not a bad one. Relena haters went way over-board absolutely, but that relationship was overall pretty terrible if you ask me. I'm really not a fan of 'wear them down until they date you' type of relationships, and that was a big one.

Hmmm, maybe more tolerant, but MUCH less vitriolic.

Seconding this so hard. For a lot of shippers, nothing is to awful for the female character who comes between their ship. She's a psychotic, moronic, narcissistic, slut/bitch/cunt, and wouldn't it be awesome if our fave shot her in the gut, stepped on the wound, told her what a slut/bitch/cunt she is, and then put a bullet between her eyes? Yeah, it'd be so satisfying, and nothing more than she deserves.

I've just never seen the kind of vitriol directed at male characters who obstruct the ship that is directed at female characters who obstruct the ship.

Yup!

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I never followed much if any F/F, so I saw no evidence to this, but I do agree that as bad as people could be there were some people who tried to defend the female character people hated for getting in the way of their ships.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
I've only ever seen people bashing the female obstacle to an M/M ship, sorry. In... hallucinatorily vicious ways.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen - if you've seen it, you've seen it. But daaaaaaamn, the misogyny is unpleasant to see.

I mean, no sorry. bashing one part of a ship for another was accepted regardless of gay or het, but writing m/m bashing some woman was INSANE and like...it practically became a trope. So...

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
You know it as a trope because you know how much everyone else hated it. My point stands.

[personal profile] meadowphoenix 2020-01-01 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
facts not in evidence babe. tropes become tropes because they are common and that's literally all you can infer here. i knew it was a trope because i saw it all the time.

two pieces of advice: learn what a trope is academically, not the fandom understanding, and don't make logical leaps and qed. you just look strong and wrong.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I think maybe you just like het and don't like F/F and that's okay, and you don't actually need to reach to justify it. I promise there's a niche out there for you.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

(Anonymous) 2020-01-02 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
I don't especially like het? I don't mind it when it's canon, but most of my ships are m/m and f/f where there's no canon male love interest for either of them.

I don't know why everyone is so against people thinking they might sometimes have reasons for what they like. I'm not "trying" to justify anything, I was not lying when I said I thought that might be a reason, because I always immediately think of the male character hate when I see an f/f ship that seems fun but one of them has a male love interest.
