I think it’s annoying how people are acting like Rowling was attacking trans women when she tweeted her support for Maya Forstater. The actual case is messy, but Maya’s conflict was with a non-binary person named Gregor Murray, who has a history of harassing women. I think if more people knew what Rowling was talking about, there would be less backlash.

We know. Anyone who doesn't agree with you is a troll, nazi, fascist, etc... And you feel the need to shut them up because they offend your hive mind.

Y'all need some new material. You're boring as shit. You would think with all the online begging someone would would take a few dollars hire a writer to come up with some better lines.

Maya's "conflict" mainly consisted of her writing - by her own admission - about 150 tweets about how trans people don't exist. But sure, tell me more about this history of "harassing women".

(Anonymous) 2020-01-04 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
What the judge ultimately rejected was Forstater's belief that she was entitled to misgender trans people, regardless of whether it constituted harassment, and be protected by human rights law in doing so.

But I'm sure that Gregor Murray is to blame for that somehow.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-04 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Why don’t you google Murray

(Anonymous) 2020-01-04 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Murray being bad does not make Forstater good, so the argument seems sorta irrelevant

(Anonymous) 2020-01-04 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Here's the thing, what makes her transphobic isn't that she sided this way in one instance. It's that she took this one instance and generalized it to every instance. Even if unintentional, it showed her passive transphobia.

Because if biological sex is the important and defining and "real" thing here, and she is agreeing that it is the "real" thing by defending the person who supposedly said it... then it applies to everyone else just as much, right?

Unless somehow, you read "sex is real, sometimes, but sometimes it isn't, and gender identity is separate from sex anyway, so it doesn't matter what I say about sex!" out of "sex is real."

Personally I don't know how you did that

(Anonymous) 2020-01-04 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
No.

The problem is not just defending Forstater (and by the way, I'm not really sure your summary of the case is right, but that's not even relevant to the point I want to make). JKR's defense of Forstater was not that Gregor Murray is a bad person.

JKR's defense of Forstater was that biological sex is real, and that all Forstater was doing was defending the notion that biological sex is real, and that this was fine and good. And that's not what Forstater was doing - Forstater was really deeply committed to the idea that trans people don't exist and that biological sex is destiny. Characterizing that position, in that way, is transphobic. So either JKR is transphobic or she's extraordinarily ignorant of the actual facts of the case because she's only listening to transphobes.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-04 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
She's only listening to that UK left brand of feminists that don't like transwomen, it sounds like.

It's such a weird group, those people.

I get that there are some nutjobs out there like the person in Canada who wanted his scrote waxed in a women's salon, but those are few and far between compared to 99.9% sincere trans folk.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-04 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
The problem is that all the vocal ones are the nutjobs and the reasonable ones are labelled as truscum and ostracized by their own community. AGP is rampant among adult men presenting as trans, it's not only a 0.1%.

Genuine trans people have all my sympathy, but let's not pretend the current trans community isn't a cesspool. Trans women need to make a distinction between themselves and AGP men, the sooner the better. LGBT acceptance is declining thanks to people like Yaniv or McKinnon; this is affecting all of us.

It's only a tiny but very vocal minority that is getting a disproportionate amount of publicity thanks to social meda. They'll soon move on to the next manufactured outrage. Ignore their tantrums, trying to reason with TRAs is like yelling at a wall.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-04 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Trans rights are human rights

(Anonymous) 2020-01-04 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Side question:
Why is not understanding/supporting/accepting trans people considered a phobia? For that matter, why do we commonly label negative or bigoted behavior a phobia?

Ignorance (and things of that nature) are not inherently fear-driven. I don't get it.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-04 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
You're not wrong. It's just the way we use the language, same way that TERF now gets often applied to people who aren't radical feminists. Just how it goes with language, is how I feel about it.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-04 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Because phobia doesn't just mean fear, words can have more than one meaning.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/phobia

The second definition is "intolerance or aversion for".

Anon, I've often wondered the same question. Like not liking and automatically approving everything gay makes a person homophobic.

Signed, an old bi who doesn't "get" pansexuality. (Slightly different topic, but as long as I have a smokescreen of anonymity... I don't understand the "Need" for pansexuality when bisexuality already encompasses everything that pan thinks it is. Pan seems the younger, hipper bi, not actually different, despite what pan people say.)

Agreed. Murray is problematic.

My bad!

(Anonymous) 2020-01-04 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I meant Jessica Yaniv is problematic, NOT Murray. Oops.

Re: My bad!

(Anonymous) 2020-01-04 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Gregor Murray is a lesbophobic tool. He's problematic, too.

I agree.

This isn't the first incident where JKR has interacted with transphobic tweets. There was that whole big thing where she went "Whoopsie, I had a middle aged moment" when she liked a transphobic tweet, there was a big ruckus about it and then it kept happening. She kept following more and more transphobic people. This is just the mask coming off for her crypto Terfing.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-04 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Not like jkr hasn't been liking transphobic tweets for a WHILE now or anything...

(Anonymous) 2020-01-05 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought this was Kathleen Kennedy for a second there.
