I’m saying pick your battles. Go after Trump and the Republicans who are actively hurting trans people, not a beloved children’s author.

There was a minor flurry of chatter two weeks ago and everyone who's not on f!s moved on.

Criticizing JK Rowling for open transphobia in no way precludes opposing Donald Trump.

Sounds a whole lot like you're saying the feelings of trans people don't matter and that they should pick the battles YOU want to fight.

And do you really think there are people who are choosing to criticize JKR while... ignoring politicians who are actively harming them? Do you not understand people fighting more than one battle at once? Because I'm picking fucking all of them.

Did I grow up loving Harry Potter? Sure. My sister introduced me to the books when we were young. My family bonded over reading the books together and waiting for the later ones to be released, we went to a midnight book release party together for the last one. Had a lot of fun. Poured who knows how many hours into drawing the characters, taking sorting and patronus quizzes, sharing fan theories and thoughts on ships...

But my sister and I are both trans, and our lives and our dignity are worth more than a slavish devotion to someone who once wrote a thing we cared about.

I mean, I'm a fan of the works of HP Lovecraft and he was also a garbage person who believed awful, hateful things. It's possible to love a book or a series, and be nostalgic about the place it had in your life, and still be critical of the author when they spread harmful speech. This wasn't an innocent mistake, this wasn't the first time JKR has liked TERF rhetoric, this is just the point at which even people who hadn't previously been following closely enough to be disappointed had to face the conversation.

And by the way, it's not up to you to say what 'actively' hurts trans people-- because seeing a beloved children's author give voice to our enemies DOES hurt us. And being told to sit down and shut up hurts us further. We're not the ones dividing the community-- you are, when you ask us to sit on our feelings for your comfort.

Singling JKR, arguably the most famous author in the world is exactly the battle trans people should fight since she is such a high profile person. Attacking her draws way more attention than even going after Trump at this point because everybody attacks that guy for everything. But JKR's still on a pedestal so people are more likely to take what she says seriously.

People aren’t going to choose you over her.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-06 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, so it's APPEASEMENT you want. Okay. Let's all just pretend we're not gay, then all the homophobes will be happy, too.

Quit using my sexuality for your bashing of trans people. It's disgusting and makes you subhuman.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-06 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
if you want more people to turn against you.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-06 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
If that's your thinking, you were never with us to begin with. Jesus.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-06 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I’m gay.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-06 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
DA

That doesn't mean anything. There have been gay people (and black people, and people of every other marginalized group, since the beginning of time) who weren't on the side of the people fighting for equality, who for whatever reason (they thought it was "easier" or they had self-esteem issues and secretly agreed with the oppressors or whatever) thought their own self-interests weren't worth it.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-06 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Attacking Rowling isn’t “fighting for equality”

(Anonymous) 2020-01-06 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Considering all the complaining about "the trans community" in this thread, it's not just "attacking Rowling".

(Anonymous) 2020-01-06 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
It's disgusting and makes you subhuman.

Wow, no. That is a truly hypocritical and inane opinion to have. It's also just not correct.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-06 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"Retract support of a victimized group so that WE won't be dragged down with them" is how Germans ended up turning in their neighbors, so yeah, it's disgusting and subhuman.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-06 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I'm tired of appeasing transphobes because oh noes I might be fucking dragged down with them!!!!

No. If you want to use my sexuality as your battering ram while shoving other people down, then go get fucked. I'm not quieting down because I hurt some disgusting transphobes delicate fee-fees.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-06 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
You know, the idea that anyone has to "choose" is a classic example of fandom stupid.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-07 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL I will choose the living, breathing humans over a fictional world, every single time. What's wrong with you?
