I actually wrote a modernized version of the Cask of Amontillado for a playwriting class about 9 years ago. It was set in New Orleans during Mardi Gras (because it always has to be Mardi Gras when you're setting a story in New Orleans). It kind of sucks, but eh, I had fun writing it at least. I would definitely love to see a modern version of the story done properly, though.

As for fantasy races in the modern world, you might enjoy Seanan McGuire's October Daye series as well as her InCryptid series. Also, right now I'm reading a book called Orc Road Trip that's set in the modern U.S., but it has (as you can probably guess) orcs, dwarves, elves, talking dogs (specifically beagles) and other fantasy elements mixed in as well. I'm only about 5 chapters in, but so far it's been a pretty fun read. Right now you can get the ebook for free on Kindle, too, if you're interested.
