Peter Pan. I'd like more creepy versions where Peter Pan isn't necessarily a good guy as well.

Just like general fantasy races in the modern world. Like our technology and world, but we live alongside elves/dwarves/etc (maybe elves have their own dimension that uses magic the way we use technology or something). IDK. Just I'd love to see classic fantasy things in the modern world. Or a futuristic world too.

Macbeth. Best Shakespeare play. I know, based on real history (sort of), but still I'd love to see a modern take.

Cask of Amontillado. Not sure what the modern version of that would be, but...

Have you ever seen Scotland, PA? It isn't for everyone, but it's Macbeth in the 1970s, with the feud over a restaurant instead of a kingdom, and with Maura Tierney as Lady Macbeth and Christopher Walken as McDuff. I was really into it at the time. XD

Have you read The Child Thief by Brom? Bit heavy on the grimdark at times but might be relevant to your interests.

In the book, Peter Pan isn't good *at all*. He's creepy and really kind of vicious and a bit evil. Killing Lost Boys off just to see what happens, forgetting about them for years, basically being rather weird and horrible.

Of course, I had to write fic, heh. But yeah - if you haven't read it, read the book, it's pretty damn interesting.

I actually wrote a modernized version of the Cask of Amontillado for a playwriting class about 9 years ago. It was set in New Orleans during Mardi Gras (because it always has to be Mardi Gras when you're setting a story in New Orleans). It kind of sucks, but eh, I had fun writing it at least. I would definitely love to see a modern version of the story done properly, though.

As for fantasy races in the modern world, you might enjoy Seanan McGuire's October Daye series as well as her InCryptid series. Also, right now I'm reading a book called Orc Road Trip that's set in the modern U.S., but it has (as you can probably guess) orcs, dwarves, elves, talking dogs (specifically beagles) and other fantasy elements mixed in as well. I'm only about 5 chapters in, but so far it's been a pretty fun read. Right now you can get the ebook for free on Kindle, too, if you're interested.

I've read lots of urban fantasy like that. Granted, most is much (much, much) more iddy than it is classic literature, but they are fun reads. I wouldn't mind more of it, though, as I love modern takes on fae and elves and the like.

Is any of it any good, though? Most of what I've tried in the genre hasn't been good. Also, I'd like more of a mix of of genres than I've seen. Like, urban fantasy feels very modern with fantasy races interpreted and written very modern. I'd like to see them written more classically and see more of thee traditional fantasy tropes in a modern setting.

Good as in I enjoyed it? Yes. Good as in memorable and likely to stand the test of time? Not so much.

Like there is the Black Dog series by Hailey Edwards. (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00P23SDQS ) I don't remember too much of it, as I've been working on her potentiate series, but I remember liking it, and it had some more traditional fae stuff.

I again only remember liking the series and that it had fae in modern times, but I read all of the Changeling series by Glynn Stewart (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B077G33P2C ).

And I also enjoyed the October Days series by Seanan Macguire that the other person mentioned. (https://smile.amazon.com/Rosemary-Rue-October-Daye-Book-ebook/dp/B002N83HAW/ ) I know she can be a controversial author, though.

I do think that most of what I've read is more modern than classical, though, which wouldn't be for you. I only grabbed a few from my more recently read authors. I was just more comisserating that I enjoyed that as well.

Actually those look interesting. Putting them on my list. I do like straight-up modern stuff too. I just would sometimes like to see traditional takes on elves, dwarves, etc. rather than them being reimagined all the time. But I'll do any well-written fantasy really. Most of the urban fantasy I've seen has been romance stuff and more romance than fantasy, and that is not my cup of tea at all. These look cool though.

Yeah, I definitely hear you on the "more romance than fantasy" issue. So many books go that route, and I'm like "but I want to hear more about the fae politics/werewolf war/evil assassin/whatever, not generic romance!" I will often end up reading them anyway, as at least they have a bit to them and I read a ton, but mostly they are meh.

Good luck in your quest to find good things!
