Alright, which beloved kid character(s) did you either outgrow or never see the appeal of?? Why?

Wait, there are beloved kid characters?

Like who???

Home Alone? You gotta admit the kid is both competent and resourceful.

I was just about to name him as a child protagonist who hasn't held up over time. I think it's pretty universally agreed on. I mean, the name Kevin got popular in Germany because of the movie and now it has such bad connotations that people named Kevin get a lower than standard fee if they want to legally change their name.

TIL that there is such a thing as "Kevinism." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevinism

Really? I love the first movie, and him. I can see how the later movies don't hold up but they all have this ACME/Bugs Bunny violence that's more nostalgic than anything. He had every right to wish his family away in the first movie too, his family was horrible.

I honestly feel like the entire movie hasn't held up over time. Not just technology-wise, but because of the way it was marketed. Slapstick comedy? Sure, it's hilarious. Wholesome family Christmas movie? Fuck no, it's terrible. If we were to take it seriously at all, it perpetuates the harmful message that you must maintain family ties even at the cost of your sanity and well-being.

Pretty much all of them, it's gotten to the point I only need to look at the cast of the show to decide if the child character is too annoying to watch. I can only name a few that don't completely piss me off. I had to go through a (very unreliable, since Baywatch was listed for some reason) list of media with Child Protagonists...

Pinocchio (would have been more use as firewood)
Coco (graverobber)
Coraline (though it might just be me not liking the movie too much)
South Park (it's intentional, but still annoying)

And the worst child character (or rather character overall) is Tsuna, from KHR! He's the absolute worst.

There's a lot of other anime/JRPG's that I could also add who I might even dislike more, but none are coming to mind right now.

Wesley Crusher and every obnoxious little kid in a Japanese monster movie.

Wesley got better later on, at least, though he was defo still a bit of a wunderkind :/ At least not as aggravating a wunderkind?

Yeah, I agree. Wesley is very much annoying.

I absolutely hate Steven Universe, lmao. The show would be 5000% better without him. Connie too, but to a lesser degree.

The kid from the movie Searching for Bobby Fischer. It's probably just because my family loved that movie that I specifically think of him, but in my mind he's the quintessential twee unrealistically nice, smart and mature child every parent dreams of having.

Sakura from Cardcaptor Sakura. Sooooo boring. Even her "quirks" are boring.

I haven't watched Cardcaptor Sakura since I was a kid, but I'd never pin her on the list. She does fit though, I guess she was boring, since I can't really recall anything specific about her character, the side characters were what did it for me.

I can't remember his name, but I couldn't stand the obnoxious little brother from Over the Garden Wall. He was like a walking advertisement for birth control and I hated him so much that I couldn't get past the first episode. I do respect his choice to wear a teapot on his head, though. Uncle Iroh would definitely approve.

Barely made it through the first HDM book because Lyra was such an unlikeable brat.

Same. I didn't bother to finish the series.
