You're really going to suggest that they are "objectively" (not sure that is entirely a thing when it comes to media myself) more mindless than other action movies/mindless romcoms/etc. where the whole purpose is to entertain audiences and make money? I think you have a personal grudge that is coloring your perceptions, OP. Nothing wrong with hating the MCU. But there are lots of similar movies out there. I'd personally argue that some of them have more meaningful plots than others (Cap 2 for example). But even the more mindless ones are on par with similar action movies that have always been a thing.

Seconding this so hard. Especially the part about OP having a grudge that's coloring their perceptions.

I will admit that, even as someone who really likes the MCU, it can be a bit samey and risk-averse. And the MCU as a whole seems to have...limited depth? It's no kiddie pool, but it's more like the deep end than the ocean, imo. (If you wanna go deep with it, you've gotta do that for yourself.) But holy crap, I have seen so. many. movies. that are so. much. worse. than even the worst Marvel movie.

This.

The Ant Man movies were surprisingly good, and I saw Captain Marvel for the first time last night. That turned out to be really good.

People don't watch the MCU for deep meaning or profound philosophical points, either. But it doesn't mean there is a lack of substance in the movies.

How Tony Stark has been portrayed particularly in the first Iron Man movie and in the Age of Ultron says a lot, apropos for today. Plus the fact that Tony Stark having such harsh views of who must be punished and how it was realized by the others is almost approaching the concept of the dark side and how anger leads to that path.

I think people consume too much media and pay too much attention to things like TV tropes tends to make them jaded, instead of encouraging people into seeing what's new in latest thing.
