But in the preferred ending, after you choose to sacrifice Arcadia, Chloe immediately backs down from pretending she's ok with Max choosing and starts begging Max not to tear the picture because she'd rather die.

Huh? In the version I played she tells Max she will stick with her no matter what.

There are multiple endings to all the Life Is Strange games and the depend on all the choices the player makes throughout the game. If choices you made earlier in the game didn't convince Chloe that her life was more important than that of the town than will have different reactions based on the final choice you make.
