(Anonymous) 2020-01-12 12:53 am (UTC)(link)I do think media has the capacity to influence societal ideation, to some extent. That said, I think that fanfic is kind of the last of our worries on that front. On a spectrum, some randoms on the internet writing rape as sexy, warning for their content, and posting it on tumblr/ao3 is a tiny grain of sand of potential normalization for those concepts, at most. Compare that to the "mountain" that is popular media as a whole, and how often it depicts sex, gender, romance, and consent in biased and inaccurate ways - without ever acknowledging that it's doing so.
Like, no matter how disgusted you are by the smell, feel, and overall existence of hairspray, for example, it doesn't really make sense to hate someone who uses hairspray for ruining the environment. The environment has bigger problems, and frankly, you probably contribute to them too, in your own way.
I say this as someone who is deeply squicked out by 99.9% of all noncon.
