(Gary Sinise as Mac Taylor from CSI:NY)
Not secret: I am as left as they come
Secret: If more conservatives were like him I wouldn't have such a problem with them (and I bet he thinks Trump is an asshole too!)

The problem, for me, is that politics has become so polarized that characters like Mac (and Will McAvoy from The Newsroom) just don't feel realistic anymore.

If they were real people who existed, I think they would no longer be calling themselves conservatives or voting conservative, because to hold the values that they evidently hold but still support modern day conservatism would be too much cognitive dissonance for anyone to withstand. And if they were still voting conservative, then I would have to consider them to not actually hold the values they claimed to hold, because by voting conservative they'd be throwing their support behind a party that seeks to demolish the things they claim to value.

I wish we lived in a time when I could say, "Yeah, they're conservative, but I respect them." But unfortunately, we don't.

This so much. There are people I know in real life who hold similar values. Every single one of them now votes liberal/Democrat. They all say they can no longer justify voting for the Republican party and that the current "conservative" party in the US does not represent the values that are important to them and in fact are antithetical to what they believe enough that they have to vote Democrat.

That's my dad. He's what you'd call an "old school" Republican, who mostly believes in personal liberty, small government, and letting people live their own lives peacefully. He 100% votes Democrat now, because the ethos of the Republican party has become so vile ever since the Tea Party uprising that despite it not aligning with his views on government, he can't in good conscience vote for the party that straight up hates so many people.
