That's a good assessment (I was being a little too lazy to expand further than what I did!) and like you I mostly liked TLJ - because it did try to do something different. It does have issues but I've never been one who thought it deserved the level of ire it got.

And after that ire it seemed inevitable the next film would be painted into the corner of ignoring or undoing all of that. Again, I did enjoy ROS as I was watching it but I had SO MANY questions afterward and the more I thought about it, the more it felt like very little made sense or it rendered stuff in previous films completely pointless.

As for Star Trek I did watch the third in the reboot series despite my reservations and I was just annoyed all over again. By this point it feels like they don't know how to create conflict without blowing up the Enterprise. Have we ever actually got to the "explore strange new worlds" element in the new ST films?!

I didn't really mind the 3rd Star Trek movie but I think my expectations were just so low as a result of STID. I really hated STID, it might have been my least favorite movie I've ever seen in theaters, and definitely my least favorite ST movie. IDK how I'd feel if I actually went back and watched Beyond again.

I've actually not watched Beyond since we saw it at the cinema so am wondering if I should rewatch too. I remember preferring Idris as a badguy Vs Benedict but other than that all I remember is being frustrated that the ship wasn't in it for most of it yet again.

I liked Beyond (and I have rewatched it). I mean, I'm not saying it's a flawless masterpiece, but it was mostly fun and engaging, and generally felt like Star Trek.

STID was such a honking piece of crap, though. Makes Insurrection or Star Trek V feel like excellent films.
