And I think it's basically true that there are different things that different fandoms are good at, and I definitely feel like the kind of thing that OP is talking about - the big, expansive fandom and world to run around in and explore - is quite hard to find.

Wasn't Harry Potter, like, the biggest online fandom ever? The juggernaut of its day, and still popular? I don't think ANYTHING will ever compare, particularly since I really do think that fandom is more fragmented then ever because there is so much content for everyone to explore.

Seconding this. I was into a HUGE fandom for quite a few years, up until a few months ago when I fell hard for a new OTP. Now I'm going stir-crazy, because my standards and expectations are set for a massive fandom, and the fandom I'm in is smallish.
