The other was an uncomfortable stereotype with minimal grounding in reality that IIRC wasn't handled well (and I'm VERY glad they didn't get together because yeah, bullying is abusive???).

Because it's a dangerous normalization of "all homophobes are just closeted gays" instead of a lot of them just being conservative straight white men who are just assholes who are still straight. It's rare that the conservative bully is just a closeted gay man.
