In that sucking slightly less before the end is redemption, I guess he was redeemed. But since sucking less is not the same as not sucking, the best thing the character did in 3 movies was die.

kylo's redemption is a given because he's a skywalker and they all get themselves killed and then redeemed

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Except for Shmi, because she didn't need it.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Shmi deserved better than her male descendants

I’m not anti Reylo, and I don’t support antis, but I disagree with a lot about this comment.

I don’t find these two situations all that similar; the comparison feels forced to me. I don’t really think Kylo’s redemption proves the haters wrong, in that I doubt any haters actually see it as a true redemption at all. And personally I think Klaine is a lovely ship and don’t find it boring at all, while I would definitely find Kurt/Karofsky off-putting.

It's comments like this that annoy me. Some of us hate Kylo because he was written in TFA and TLJ to be hated.

idk man, if you'd seen the OT it was pretty obvious they were gonna redeem him, i'd have been surprised if they didn't. and i don't care for kylo or reylo but i'm not bothered they kissed once, he died and she's free to be shipped with whoever, no loss there imo.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, all this. I mean... if you count one pretty damn unromantic kiss while he's dying as meaning the ship is now "canon," and him helping defeat someone who was even worse than he was as ~*redemption*~ for a character who was always obviously going to be "redeemed" then...I guess all you Reylos are vindicated. Congrats. The rest of us just have to settle for getting to celebrate all the other possible characters and ships who get to survive and live happily ever after. You really showed us.

A fair criticism of the OT is that Anakin's redemption makes emotional sense, but it makes absolutely no sense as a model of any kind of justice. And it's kind of a last-act asspull for a character where the only prior hint of reconciliation was asking Luke to help him become Emperor.

Similarly, TLJ leaves Kylo as one of the most deliciously hateable characters in the franchise. There's no grounds to woobify Kylo's complete commitment to the Tarkin Doctrine. (Which arguably is worse than real-world nazis.) Kylo is a war criminal. And like Vader, Ben's redemption is a last-minute asspull. He flips in less than five minutes from "let's kill the Emperor, start the next Sith dynasty, and rule through domination and fear" to "Oh father, forgive me! I have sinned and I know not what to do."

That's one of the disagreements here. There's no reason in the text to cut Kylo any slack before Endor. And his conversion on Endor is, like so much else in TRoS, an asspull without any substantial development.

Uh, y'know, I peaced out of Glee mid season 2, so I might have missed a few things, but... how many people did Karofsky kill? Like, approximately? Did he join a new-nazi gang at some point offscreen?
Just wondering.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
honestly considering it was glee for all i know this could have actually happened, god it was a bonkers show.

"how many people did Karofsky kill? Like, approximately?"

Well, he tried to commit suicide at some point so... almost 1?

Yeah, the scale between Karofsky and Kylo Ren is completely different, which is why only one of them had to die to be redeemed.

One was a space Nazi with literal dead children on his hands.

The other was an uncomfortable stereotype with minimal grounding in reality that IIRC wasn't handled well (and I'm VERY glad they didn't get together because yeah, bullying is abusive???).

Even as dumb as Glee could be, Kurt being violently bullied was supposed to be true to life. You can't be surprised viewers reacted negatively to the possibility of Kurt/Bully after watching and empathizing with what Kurt was going through.

Writing a clichéd bad plot development for a character in a badly written movie isn't exactly proving people wrong about anything.

I like how Reylos act like they aren't batshit insane and harassing John Boyega because REEEEEEEEEEE HOW DARE HE NOT SHIP REYLO as we speak.

Seems like I'm one of the few with this opinion but...

Being a generally very bad person vs someone who purposely singled you out and bullied you for your sexual/romantic interests, yeah of course you wouldn't get with the latter. No matter how redeemed they got.
