idk man, if you'd seen the OT it was pretty obvious they were gonna redeem him, i'd have been surprised if they didn't. and i don't care for kylo or reylo but i'm not bothered they kissed once, he died and she's free to be shipped with whoever, no loss there imo.

Yes, all this. I mean... if you count one pretty damn unromantic kiss while he's dying as meaning the ship is now "canon," and him helping defeat someone who was even worse than he was as ~*redemption*~ for a character who was always obviously going to be "redeemed" then...I guess all you Reylos are vindicated. Congrats. The rest of us just have to settle for getting to celebrate all the other possible characters and ships who get to survive and live happily ever after. You really showed us.

If you’re content with your fan fiction that’s cool

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, why wouldn't they be? Exploring what came after is what fan fiction is for.

Wait, are you one of the ones who thinks that "And Rey never kissed anyone else ever again, for how could she after tasting of the forbidden delights of Ben Solo" is canon? Aww, that's adorable!

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You can pretend Rey started a lesbian convent if you want. Reylo will still be canon.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, and there is it. The problem with reylos isn't that they ship it, it's that they can't tolerate any other ship, or any criticism grounded in text of woobie Ben Solo.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Like how anyone who ships Reylo over Finnrey is racist and supports abuse?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey ship and let ship. Just if you think that Kylo Ren is some sort of precious, flawless, woobie, I think you're misreading the movies.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it was canon for a few minutes. Now it's necrophilia.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
SA - why wouldn't I be? Most of it is far better written than the half-assed dreck that the movie gave to the Reylo fans.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
ofc, there's nothing stopping me from imagining her with whoever i want bc one kiss doesn't lock her out of a romance for the rest of her life. and he's dead so she's fully free as well.

i'm good. :)

If we’re talking fan fiction then nothing is stopping Ben from coming back too

A fair criticism of the OT is that Anakin's redemption makes emotional sense, but it makes absolutely no sense as a model of any kind of justice. And it's kind of a last-act asspull for a character where the only prior hint of reconciliation was asking Luke to help him become Emperor.

Similarly, TLJ leaves Kylo as one of the most deliciously hateable characters in the franchise. There's no grounds to woobify Kylo's complete commitment to the Tarkin Doctrine. (Which arguably is worse than real-world nazis.) Kylo is a war criminal. And like Vader, Ben's redemption is a last-minute asspull. He flips in less than five minutes from "let's kill the Emperor, start the next Sith dynasty, and rule through domination and fear" to "Oh father, forgive me! I have sinned and I know not what to do."

That's one of the disagreements here. There's no reason in the text to cut Kylo any slack before Endor. And his conversion on Endor is, like so much else in TRoS, an asspull without any substantial development.

And many relyos can't stand that anyone would hate a villain who was first introduced ordering the massacre of unarmed civilians.
