Because he has a name and a face and a personality and we've gotten a little time to get to know him. In fictional war stories, virtually everyone cares more about the characters they've gotten to know than the faceless canon fodder. In fact in a lot of canons the HEROES kill a lot of faceless canon fodder - like Star Wars for example.

You care because he IS a fave, not Nameless Innocent Villager #6 or Nameless Opposing Army Guy #12.
