In fictional war stories, virtually everyone cares more about the characters they've gotten to know than the faceless canon fodder. In fact in a lot of canons the HEROES kill a lot of faceless canon fodder - like Star Wars for example.
You care because he IS a fave, not Nameless Innocent Villager #6 or Nameless Opposing Army Guy #12.
