Words of inspiration

[personal profile] philstar22 2020-01-25 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I went to an art therapy even today where they had us making pieces of art themed on words that we picked that were words that inspired us or our theme words for 2020. I picked hope and compassion because those are the words that I find inspire me the most and keep me going when I'm in a bad place.

What words do that sort of thing for you? What words are you inspiration or themes of your life currently or just words that you find that influence you in some way.

I like the word "kind" because it reminds me of my favorite Doctor Who quote ("Always try to be nice, but never fail to be kind"). For the longest time, I thought being nice meant being a good person who didn't cause any trouble. This was a problem when I started working because, in an effort to be nice, I would try to help all my coworkers. This resulted in a lot of extra work and I didn't want to say no because it wouldn't be nice. It sounds kinda dumb, but Twelve's character arc on Doctor Who really made me realize that you can be a good person without being a doormat.

I find these Shel Silverstein poems pretty inspirational:

Listen To The Mustn'ts

Listen to Mustn'ts, child, listen to the Don'ts.
Listen to the Shouldn'ts, the Impossibles, the Won'ts.
Listen to the Never Haves, then listen close to me.
Anything can happen, child, Anything can be.

Invitation

If you are a dreamer, come in
If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar,
A hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer...
If you're a pretender, come sit by the fire
For we have some flax-golden tales to spin.
Come in!
Come in!

And this Shel Silverstein poem may seem a little wistful on the face of it, but I like the idea of it:

MAGIC
by Shel Silverstein

Sandra's seen a leprechaun,
Eddie touched a troll,
Laurie danced with witches once,
Charlie found some goblins' gold.
Donald heard a mermaid sing,
Susy spied an elf,
But all the magic I have known
I've had to make myself.

There are a lot of random lines that I've picked over the years that don't mean much to anyone but me. Some of them are from fics that really stuck with me over the years, or shows/media that remind me of simpler, happier times.

'Nothing Happened in Corleone', is from a fic I loved over a decade ago. I'll sometimes shorten it to 'Nothing Happened', but it depends on the context I'm remembering it for.

'If it isn't alright, it isn't the end' is from Tsubasa, technically it's been a quote since long before that, but it's what introduced to the line in a context I like to reassure myself with.

I've always liked "Worrying is the poorest use for your imagination." It really helps to calm me down when I start to get anxious about things. It reminds me that all the fears in my head are not actually real and to try to channel those anxieties into a more positive creative endeavour.

How do YOU search for fics?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-25 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you go straight to AO3 or look for recommendations? Other archives? Do you start from a fandom, a ship or a specific content tag? Do you limit the word count in any way? Do you only search for completed fics? Are there any tags or words you always exclude?

Tell me all about your searching preferences!

Depends on what I'm looking for. My two OTPs don't have that many fics, so I'll just read everything tagged with them and then reread my favorites.

If I'm looking for a specific kink/theme/etc., then I ask for recs because I may not be looking for a specific fandom and I also don't want to wade through bad stuff to find the good examples.

If it is a new fandom for me and the fandom is bigger, I'll also ask for recs unless I have a very specific idea of what I want and can narrow down the tags so as to only have a few to choose from.

I don't limit word count. I do tend to focus on completed fics. I don't exclude tags in my searches, but I won't read anything tagged with anything involving foot fetish, and unless it is one specific ship I probably won't read anything tagged humiliation. And with my main OTP I won't read rape/non-con because I don't ship them that way even though a huge chunk of the shippers seem to.

I always go straight to AO3.

If I'm getting into a new fandom I'll usually go to that fandom's tag, sort by kudos and see what's popular. Otherwise I start either from a ship or a particular content tag.

If I start the search with a freeform tag, I'll exclude fandoms and ships I'm not familiar with or I actively dislike.

I only ever look for completed works, and I tend to set a minimum word count of 3k or thereabouts.

Usually I'll exclude the warning for rape and major character death unless there is a canon event to which they might be referring.

As for freeform tags, I'll exclude as many AU tags as I can (except for "canon divergence", which is the reason I can't just exclude the "alternate universe" tag and be done with it), sad or open endings, PWP (unless I'm specifically looking for porn), and some fandom-specific tags.

Depending on the results I'm getting for a particular search, I might also exclude the word "reader" so I can avoid reader!fic.

I usually fall in love with a character or pairing. I go straight to AO3 since that is what most people post on. At first I usually check the first 2-3 pages of most Kudo'd in the tag.

If I eventually get more into the fandom, I just go through the whole Completed Fics for that tag. No matter how many pages, I go through them all. All. Generally from the newest to the oldest so that I don't miss anything when no ones are posted.

Usually I start by going to the fandom tag on ao3 and sorting by kudos, then filtering from there. If I read a good piece of fic, I'll often look at their bookmarks and see if there's anything I like there. Well, that's for new fandoms, anyway.
If I'm browsing in a fandom I'm more familiar with, I'll usually go to the tag and apply as many filters as I feel like. Some fandoms, I just filter by kudos and have at it; others, I have to filter out a dozen pairings, crossover fandoms, and miscellaneous tags before I can proceed.

AO3 pretty exclusively, regardless of what I'm looking for.

If it's a fandom or a ship, it's pretty easy, I'll usually just filter word count and maybe filter any tags that are super popular in the fandom that I dislike. Sometimes, I might sort by kudos and like through the most popular fics first, depending on the size of the fandom / how old and active it is. Otherwise, I sort by date posted. If I'm searching by a specific content tag, I'll usually try to filter very, very aggressively to get as much crap out of the results as possible.

search for the pairing tag i'm into, since i pretty much just read ship-fic, filter out ships/tags i don't want then hit enter and go. and i will got through it all, no matter how much or little there is.

I go straight to AO3 and go to whatever fandom/ship I'm looking for and sort by bookmarks. I figure people are more stingy with their bookmarks than their kudos. I'll narrow it down from there, but that's always my starting point.

Before AO3 I used FF.net almost constantly. I'd use story search to find certain parings, or I'd look through the favourite stories/authors of writers with similar interests to mine. I used to have a system that worked out pretty well for me, but I rarely use FF.net anymore so I've kinda forgotten how to navigate the site some.
Now I just use AO3, I'll find my OTP an exclude any results that include parings/characters I don't like. Depending on the fandom, I'll also remove AU- Modern Setting, and High School/College/University. I'm not fond of Established Relationship either, so I might ex out of that one as well. I'll list them by word count and read through the tags to decide if it has anything I particularly like/don't like. After exhausting all the fics I find on AO3, I'll go back through fics with tags I initially excluded to see if any catch my interest. If I don't find any I'll look through FF to see if I can find anything new.
I've tried to use Wattpad all of once and never looked back. Obviously I made it hard on myself for trying to find a rarepair in a small fandom without any familiarity with the site, but oh well. If I run out of fics for a more popular paring, I'll probably go back to try and navigate it again some time.

I go to AO3, then search by fandom, ship, and kudos at once. I'm only really interested in read fics for my OTPs, so I'll always filter by ship.

Then I just start reading what appeals to me. I hardly ever add any other filters. I just scroll past whatever doesn't appeal to me.

If it's a large fandom, I'll probably get around to checking out some recs pages eventually.

I won't read WIPs when I first get into a fandom, but if I read everything that appeals to me and there's nothing left, then I'll start in on the WIPs.

Well, everything being mood and fandom dependent I usually

1) go off recommendations
2) try to find an archive/fandom specific site that has had contests anand read the top pics for fic choices
3) If I like an author I tend to see what else they've written or fics they have favorites (sometimes I check the comments on a fic and check out what those readers are reading, this is often on AO3)
4) search o AO3. I tend to like long/epic fic (or that have 2 or 3 parts) I'll search more on the kind of theme I'm looking for and tend to avoid uncompleted fics shorter than 7 to 10 chapters.
5) ff.net, oldie but a goodie, and follow the same procedures as 3) and 4). I think I their forums and communities sections you also find similar groupings of fics ( I started a comm once on it, but it had a max of like...4 or 5 fics, 2 of which were mine lol. I'm sure better comes have come up since then since what I was searching for then has gained more traction now)

The Larklight trilogy by Philip Reeve. It's a boys-own-adventure Victorian sci-fi, where Britain has colonized the solar system, the American Revolution was understandably a failure (I mean, come on, they're against a space empire), and things generally run on pre-modern science - so alchemy, space is full of aether, the planets don't need terraforming... it's fun as HECK.

Also there are hats who wear spiders.
