It also delivers specific government aid and financial rights to help support the family unit, whether it's just the husband/wife, wife/wife, or husband/husband, or them and a kid or two or three, whatever. It's also a cultural aspect, but for the most part, the most important thing to the LAW is what it denotes to the government that you and your partner are allowed to have, the taxes you have to pay, and various other socio-economic important things that I'm sure are also just 'stupid social institution that don't matter'.

I understand. But I also don't really care about such things myself. I don't support Amendment 8, I just find the "benefits" too small to be worth fighting for.

Re: 123

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-11-08 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
That's hilarious. They aren't small benefits at all, you know, besides being socially seen as equal by our fellow humans, but being able to have access to government services for spouses, not 'life partners'.

But I'm guessing you're not gay, so it really WOULDN'T matter to you,

Re: 123

(Anonymous) 2008-11-08 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
You could easily fight for the benefits without fighting for marriage, though. That makes your point about "fighting for the benefits" kinda incongruent.

I'm gay, actually. Thank you very much for telling me what should matter to me and what should not.

Re: 123

How you can be gay and not see being thought of as someone that should be swept under the rug rather than seen as a normal and contributing member of society as a hurtful and very terrible thing honestly confuses me.

Re: 123

(Anonymous) 2008-11-08 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably because I don't plan on married anyway.

Re: 123

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-11-08 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not the point. The point is, whether or not you, me, or whoever else plans on getting married, we should still have the right, and be seen as an equal person to the rest of society.

But since you don't plan on getting married, why should it matter, right?

Re: 123

(Anonymous) 2008-11-08 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
a) My point is that marriage shouldn't be regulated by the government. Marriage is a ceremony.
b) They're not taking away your right to have a job. They're not taking away your right to own property. They're not taking any essential "freedom" out of you. I just don't understand this fight.

Re: 123

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-11-08 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, you still aren't getting my point that being married isn't just a word, whether you like it or not, it is actually something that not only MEANS something to some of us, but actually DOES give you many economical rights. Just because you're ~*edgy*~ really doesn't change that, as much as you try.

Re: 123

(Anonymous) 2008-11-08 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Why not just make Civil Union co-exist with Marriage, both with the same benefits?

Re: 123

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-11-08 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Because that's still segregation of two different groups. Why should it be called something different? Why not just marriage?

Re: 123

(Anonymous) 2008-11-09 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
To make society grow out of marriage slowly. You slowly eliminate government-endorsed marriage by making Civil Unions more and more like it. In 80 years, perhaps, society will be ready to abandon government-endorsed marriage.

Re: 123

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-11-09 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Just because you're a cynic doesn't mean marriage doesn't mean something special to other people. You're ... kind of an asshole, you know that?

Re: 123

(Anonymous) 2008-11-09 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not taking away their right to marry. They can still hold parties, celebrate and even have a ceremony!

Re: 123

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-11-09 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's a lot easier for you to choose not to marry, than for everyone else to change what marriage means to them, and what marriage has been for the past thousand years, or whatever.

Re: 123

[identity profile] sadieko.livejournal.com 2008-11-08 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Because this system already exists: civil marriages, recognized by the state, and religious marriages, recognized by religion.

Why make a whole new set of vernacular just because gays want to get married? Besides, the concept of "separate but equal" was decided to be a bad way of dealing with racism because there is too high a chance of it not being equal.

Re: 123

[identity profile] sadieko.livejournal.com 2008-11-08 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
They're not taking away your right to have a job.

They used to be able to and people fought against that, why not fight against this?

Marriage enables two people to take better care of each other financially and physically. In the end, heterosexuals have the right to get married to the person of their choice. Homosexuals don't. This is unequal.

(also, my girlfriend didn't care a lick about civil marriage either, until after the two of us had been together for a year or so. Now we both want it for ourselves.)

Re: 123

[identity profile] mekosuchinae.livejournal.com 2008-11-09 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
And obviously since it isn't important to you, that means it's ridiculous for anyone else to want to fight for it.
