I didn't think this was really fandom even if tumblr is a fandom space, but here's your secret anyway, anon!

Huh. It never even occurred to me this wouldn't be fandom. It's about tumblr/fandom customs (posting a selfie for your followers to see what you look like), which to me makes it about fandom. I just keep seeing my fandom mutuals do this, so to me it's a completely fandom related thing. But I guess I can see how it's not.

Maybe I should've said, "This is fandom; being pretty and showing off our physical appearances is very much not what fandom is generally about." I just thought that part was obvious. I mean, if I was making this same secret in the context of a fashion blog, it wouldn't make a bit of sense, would it?

I think it would be fandom if it had listed some sort of fandom accomplishment, like followers to your fannish blog or favorites of your fanfic. Or something.

Otherwise its just like. I posted a selfie because I got 300 Instagram followers. Tumblr isn't inherently a fandomy place. If you replace Tumblr with Instagram in that secret, it's unrelated to fandom, so why would it being Tumblr make it related?

Yeah, I literally completely forget Tumblr is not synonymous with fandom. Tumblr has only ever meant fandom to me. Like, I have zero connection to tumblr as anything else. I don't think I've ever even clicked onto Tumblr for anything non-fandom related, so I forget it's not inherently a fandom space, lol.

SA - Thank you for making it for me, though! :)

It's good that you realize this is shallow, but as long as you're not putting down other people I think it's OK to think you're pretty and want to post selfies.

Work it, sis!

Nothing wrong with wanting to show yourself off a little, as long as you're not putting anyone else down in the process.

Fucking go for it

Go for it. Nothing wrong with wanting to get some positive vibes.

I feel you. I'm in my 30s too, finally past some really awkward features that dogged me past my teens into my 20s, and I feel like almost like I'm wasting time not getting myself on record at my peak.

I honestly look way better now at age 30 than I did in my teens or early 20s, tbh. I wasn't overweight but had a lot of baby fat in my face, and was generally awkward and pimply. Just kind of a potato. I'm not saying I'm hot now, but I think I look way better now that the baby fat has melted away and my face cleared up. Plus, I'm definitely more confident in my body.

Point is, don't go to the internet because you're desperate for validation - that's a bad remedy for bad self-esteem issues. But if you feel cute, rock it! Take those selfies! It's so hard to feel good about how you look, no matter where you're at in life, so when you got those good feelings you damn well own 'em.

Good for both of you! I get what you mean about losing baby fat and growing into your features. I feel like that happened in my early-to-mid twenties.

Unfortunately, I think the decline has started for me. I'm a pale white woman with small features, so unfortunately, I'm not someone who can carry fine lines and the effects of gravity all that well. But hey, I take care of my skin. Hopefully I can age gracefully. :)

Also, agreed about going to the internet for validation. I definitely understand, and sometimes feel, the temptation - but man, you'll never get enough.

Not fandom in my case but I rarely take pictures so on days my hair and makeup are done I totally make excuses to post selfies on social media. I'm in my 40s and look the best I ever have and love showing it off now and then!

(Anonymous) 2020-01-31 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of get this.

I have moments where I'm totally feeling cute and would love that my fandom friends knew I was totally cute, too! I see how they squee over one another's mutual cuteness and always felt a bit left out.

My issue is that I like my privacy, too. And so does my SO who is in the same fandom who at one time had crazy, stalkerish fan poodles. In fact, THEY were the only reason I didn't post a selfie at particular points everyone was oversharing. I knew my SO would be mad that I could potentially be outing them in the fandom by association.

Thank you all for being positive and non-judgy. I appreciate youuu!
