Your paragraphs about it seeming privileged make total sense to me. I've had A Hard Knock Life and been through a lot of bad shit in just 30 years, and I think part of why it's upsetting me is because the message was even IF I make it through the real-world shit and get eternal paradise, that's gonna suck too, just in a different way! I don't know. Based on other online reactions, a lot of people loved the finale's message, but it wasn't one I personally needed.

It's just so weird to me. I mean, I'm used to having unpopular opinions and hating stuff that other people love, but usually in the opposite direction. Usually I like dark, disturbing stuff that other people hate, so the idea of everyone loving something super depressing and that being the most popular opinion is really freaking strange to me.

Because it's not depressing? The eventual death of the self is, ultimately the endgame posed by most world religions that are not bullshit Chritianity, (and even honest Christian eschatology won't envision Heaven as The Good Place or Hell as The Bad Place.) The reveal that The Good Place is yet another form of dukkha that must eventually end is a direct reference to the forms of Buddhism that Chidi discusses in the final episode. And once they replaced a folk-Christian eschatology with a dharmic one, they might as well go all in on the idea that existence is suffering.

To me it is. I thought it was fairly obvious I was just sharing my own opinion.

might as well go all in on the idea that existence is suffering.

And that's bullshit, IMO. I'm an atheist so I'm not offended by any religious aspects or anything, but it's because I don't believe that we'll ever get anything else that I feel like we should appreciate and enjoy life as much as we can.

If someone hates their life and feels like they're suffering just to be alive then fine, they can kill themselves. I just don't want to hear about how perfect and beautiful and amazing it is.
