So, I'm sure this isn't what you mean, but like... you seem to be saying that if you're popular enough that if you say you dislike Thing A, that it's likely that people who like Thing A will see you say that and feel sad, then you're not allowed to say you dislike Thing A? Or, indeed, anything?

I'm completely fine with people not liking characters (or plots) I like but going out of the way to antagonise people via tags etc is a bit of a dick move, which is why I don't really like tumblr for legit fandom discussions as anyone being able to use the tags just seems to lead to a bunch of people screaming at one another.

You don't sound like you're going out of the way to upset people so don't let the BNF make you feel bad by association. I don't think it necessarily means you actually like a character you hate either, more that you have more empathy for people having their fandom fun times harshed in such a visible way.

I actually do like having conversations with people who don't hold the same views as me but one problem I've always had with fandom is that so few platforms seem to allow that in a civil way and it just becomes the aforementioned screaming match. Even LJ back in the day had flame wars, much as everyone has a rose-tinted view of it now because it *maybe* wasn't as bad as Twitter pile-ons and the like.

For me, it's off-putting to see people hating on stuff, no matter who's doing it.

Honestly it sounds to me like you're figuring out that things you post online that you don't think are that bad actually sound bad when you see them online without the context of the person's thoughts.

If that's the case, I'm not judging you for it. It took me embarrassingly long to figure out that words on the internet strip away all nuance and that things that sound okay in your had can sound very harsh and absolute when written down. (I'm still not very good at adapting for that. Case in point, this comment probably sounds way meaner than I mean it.)

Communication is hard. :(

I can understand feeling that way-- there are plenty of characters I don't really like, but I'm uncomfortable seeing them bashed if it feels mean-spirited or feels as if it's bashing that character's fans or picking a fight about it. There's a difference between posting about not liking a character to express your feelings and doing it in a way that stirs up drama. Of course some people will stir up drama without meaning to, or not intend something to sound as if they're picking on other fans, but it can be off-putting to see a lot of negativity even if it's something you also don't like.

That reminds me of a problem I had with a BNF in a fandom I was in. Even when I agreed with her, I didn't want to admit it, because she and her group of sycophants were so mean-spirited and snobbish to people who disagreed with her.

That seems a little unreasonable. Just being a BNF doesn't mean having/voicing their opinions on certain characters.
