Thoughts on the end of The Good Place?

[personal profile] mishey22 2020-02-02 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
People seem to either really hate it or love it (I haven't seen an in-between as of yet), but what do you guys think, F!S?

I liked it, and thought the resolution was obvious after they dropped cyclic time and Chidi pretty much reinventing the afterlife around a variant of Mahayana Buddhism.

The show isn't for me as a show but this makes me curious to hear the details of the ending as a piece of philosophy

i guess i'm probably in-between on it because my feelings were basically: it ended? and i haven't thought about it since. but then i'd been getting steadily bored of the show since about half-way through s2 and only caught up because i knew it was ending and wanted to see what they did.

99% meh because I checked out of the series when pairings and mushy love happened and literally don't care how they ended, 1% side-eyeing the vaugely suicidal vibes of voluntarily ending your eternal existence.

It was good but I didn't like it, if that makes sense. It made sense for the characters and was well acted/directed/filmed, but "Time is the real Good Place" wasn't a message I needed or wanted right now. (We'll see how I feel about it 10 years from now.)

Had parts I liked and parts I didn't - in a way, giving people infinite time and space to do/redo everything that feels incomplete is a nice idea, as is giving them some 'out' - at the same time, having most people from your life also make it in made choosing that out uncomfortably close to "suicide is a great option because, hey, it won't hurt those you leave behind because they're in paradies and have had you pretty much forever already anyway", so... eh. The fix of heaven seemed waaaaaaaaaaay too quick'n'dirty to me. Liked that Tahani managed to find a middle ground, but disliked the idea that that's somehow a unique situation and that all the rest of humanity isn't offered a "make yourself useful" option in addition to "end of afterlife as you know it" or "endless selfindulgent funtimes". Was deeply sad at the idea of Janet "alone" - at least in time as we understand it. :/

Hated it more than I've ever hated anything in my entire life.

I keep coming across all these "if you didn't think it was the most brilliant thing ever then obviously it was too high minded for you and you're just a moron who's too stupid to understand it" yet those are the same people who are like "suicide?! where did you ever get the idea that it has anything in common with suicide?!". And it's like...you can't grasp the VERY OBVIOUS suicide parallels and you're going around calling OTHER people idiots? Ok then.

It pissed me off to no end that in a show where AFTERLIFE IS CANON they threw out a surprise "nope, oblivion is the best and obvious solution" at the end.

Seriously! I'm an atheist and don't believe there is an afterlife, but I WISH there was one. The idea of being able to hang out with everyone I love forever, none of us having to deal with any stress or anxiety or work or bills or getting sick or health insurance, getting to see anything and everything and we ever wanted in the entire world, for me being able to read all the books I've ever wanted but didn't have the time for, getting to find out all the mysteries of the universe, being able to eat all the delicious foods without gaining weight, getting to learn whatever hobby you've ever been vaguely interested in but didn't have the time or money for...I can't imagine why anyone would ever willingly give that up.

I've been accused of having "too much of an imagination" (by someone who clearly didn't have enough of one, fucking asshole ex-boyfriend), but I seriously can't imagine getting bored when I could literally do anything I could ever possibly imagine. And if for some reason I did get tired of it, I feel like I'd want to do something like Tahani, or come up with some other possibility of something new to do. The idea of intentionally choosing nothingness when anything and everything is possible is just mind boggling to me.

Wait seriously? I can see people being snobby about thinking it was some brilliant meaningful masterpiece, but denying that what they were doing wasn't equivalent to suicide is mind boggling to me...

Yeah, I don't get it either. I saw one comment that said something along the lines of "it wasn't suicide because people commit suicide when they're miserable, and the characters weren't miserable, they were just bored", like...???? What??? Suicide is suicide, regardless of the reasoning or intentions behind it.
