If Yuri or Victor were a girl to the other's guy, you would literally not be arguing this, thanks.

Signed, a gay person tired of how gay relationships have to meet a much stricter, higher standard than het ones

If everything happened exactly the same way but with a girl and a guy, then I absolutely would be arguing that it's not, strictly speaking, canon.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-03 10:29 am (UTC)(link)
Then you're a rarity because the world at large would consider it canon and often it IS canon.

OP

(Anonymous) 2020-02-03 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
I would actually, regardless of their gender the show was poorly executed and based more in fanservice than substance. Pointing out that the anime went out of it's way to be heavy handed about basically everything, but shying away and making Yuri deny everything as a misunderstanding, and never committing to anything at all, has nothing to do with restricting other people from enjoying it, or say anything about the quality of gay content. It's a criticism of the show, not a grand statement about gay representation in modern media. Don't try to pin your hurt feelings on me just because I don't have the same opinion as you.

Also, being gay doesn't make your opinion any more valid than anyone else's btw.

Re: OP

Nah it actually does, because you being a Straighty McStraight (or being bi, which feels less likely given how you comment about me being gay doesn't make my opinion more or less valid because if you were queer you'd KNOW the baggage) means you don't have to deal with the baggage of having to Prove It.

Het relationships are considered canon on less than this shit, including with the "IT WAS A MISUNDERSTANDING" bullshit. They're still considered canon, whether you like it or not, OP. It's a double standard that's tiring, and if a het relationship gets less goalposts, so should gay ones.

Deal with the fact it's canon by the same principles applied to het romances or shut the fuck up at this point, I'm tired of the stupid high bar relationships like mine need to clear to be considered canon.

OP

You lost the second you attempted to guess who I am, and above all, inaccurately; because we are talking about a fictionally based anime here, not some bill equivocating gay rights.

I don't even give a shit about what Het relationships you're talking about. Since Yuri didn't act like a tsundere, and even if he had, there was no response from Victor the entire time. Which means there isn't the dynamic you're desperately trying to imply here.

Not to mention I've already said, I would judge any het/any other paring the exact same way, if all that was presented was bullshit slash powdered by outright denial.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-03 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, I think OP might just not watch anime, or not watch anime with romance in it. There are so many anime het relationships universally considered canon that show it less explicitly than Victor/Yuri. Think of every Ghibli and/or Miyazaki movie for a place to start. And for more fun, those have gotten flack by LGBT fandom for being "forced hetero." Because even they see those as totally canon, but not relationships like Victor/Yuri with more backing to them, for some reason.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-03 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
Miyazaki actually doesn't intend for those to be romantic relationships and has explicitly said so, so that's not really the best example.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-03 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
Also gay and I agree that it's so exhausting that het relationships get away with basically everything BUT I still would like a series to actually BE what it's praised for being. If someone tells me it's the best gay anime of the decade, I need more than implications.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-03 10:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I would, too, but like. Japanese media is Very Like This Period. Romances tend to get by on implications a lot more often than not, it feels.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-03 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, but that doesn't mean we can't still say "hey this is super annoying and not what we mean"

(Anonymous) 2020-02-03 10:33 am (UTC)(link)
I only stopped praising it openly for being gay because I found out some people in fandom don't consider it canonly gay. If I didn't know about this opinion, I would definitely recommend it as a great anime with canon gay because that's what I unambiguously saw when I watched it.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-03 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT - and that's great for you, but if I watched it based on that recommendation, I'd be really disappointed, because I am so sick and tired of having to be okay with scraps and subtext.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-03 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah.

That Yuuri had (or even has) a crush on Yuuko is something most fandom accepts, no one fights about and pretty much the only proofs are in ep 1. Yuuri and Victor? Unless dicks are touching, it can't be really canon, everything can be denied and anyone who disagrees has their shipping googles on.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-03 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I had to look up who Yuuko was because I've never seen fandom talking about her except occasionally as proof that Yuuri is bi, not gay.

And no one is talking about dicks touching, ever, in discussions like this. Just idk maybe a kiss that isn't censored.
