I genuinely loved this movie and thought it was funny. I think the people who outright hated it are misogynists.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-03 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the guy who made it (whose name I can't remember and I'm too lazy to Google) has a very hit and miss style for people and I would be hesitant about condemning people for disliking it

That said, a hell of a lot of it definitely was pure sexism and groggery

When people say they just personally didn't think it was that funny or it wasn't their jam, I'm cool with that. Nothing is going to be good for everyone, especially comedies.

But when they start in on how it was toooootally the WORST movie ever made, my eyes start a-rolling, because it just...wasn't. It wasn't even the worst movie /that month/ (and I know that because I saw it the week before I saw Suicide Squad and then watched it again immediately /after/ Suicide Squad to cleanse my brain).

Yeah I think people are just scarred by the discourse really

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's fair. I really wish The Discourse just hadn't happened because it was just such a fun movie for me.

yeah i tend to agree and i personally found the GB movie to be kind of boring and the humor didn't gel with me, but it was by no means the worst movie i have ever seen. like fuck me, i sat through the goddamn 1st hangover movie bored out of my fucking skull and wishing for death. GB was a breeze to get through compared to that.

and yes. SS was infinitely worse than GB, by a fucking landslide.

I saw a headline, "Why Bad Moms Succeeded Where Ghostbusters failed".

Uh. If we're talking pure numbers, Ghostbusters wasn't the success the studio wanted it to be compared to the original films but everyone I know (not just "fandom people") saw it, vs nobody saw Bad Moms. Not even to argue about how they didn't like it.

(and if they were comparing the writing and humor, they're not the same genre so they can't really be compared in that sense)

Right? Like, it did FINE. I can't stand this narrative that it was a total failure when it was really just...fine.

Are they not considered the same genre? I always thought Ghostbusters (the franchise as a whole but Ghostbusters 2016 in particular) was comedic first and foremost

(Anonymous) 2020-02-03 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
3/10

(Anonymous) 2020-02-03 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-03 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I do wonder how many people lie about enjoying this film, just to avoid being called a misogynist.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-03 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It was actually enjoyable. It's not that deep.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's a little harsh, we all lived through the promotion and fallout from the movie. It was a dumpster fire. Discourse was war-like.

They're only pointing out that you can still get a lot of flack for saying that you disliked this movie.

You say it's not that deep but I bet that this secret will be the one with the most comments today. Because it may not be deep, but it's still a raw nerve.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT you can also still get a lot of flack for saying that you liked it. It's a raw nerve on both sides, and I think it's just as harsh to say that people are just lying about liking it to avoid flames, especially when sooooo many people were so loud about how it was the worst.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Still blows my mind how much discourse it creates now.

Its a genuine shame that it didnt get the chance to hit the box office without all the bias. We'll never know just how well it could have performed.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, we're measuring against MDZS (which I personally am baffled by, not that things need to make sense to me), a thoroughly dead fandom, an obscure Netflix comedy show, and an indie horror movie, so it's not maybe the best comparison.

That said, like, implying that people who say they like the movie are lying because they're afraid of being yelled at isn't really a comment designed to keep the peace and tamp down the flames

If you're really that scared of what some randos on the internet might think of you, it sure would be easier say you haven't seen the fairly niche buddy-comedy-with-ghosts movie than to pretend you saw it and liked it...

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough. This is why I don't normally talk about it.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's particularly stupid that disliking a movie can somehow make you a misogynist in any way, and that people who think this need to get over themselves and not be so sensitive.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the worst take I saw of last year was that if you don't like MCU, you're misogynist and racist.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Except when it is glaringly the reason and the haters make that crystal clear. How about misogynists give it a rest instead, eh?

1000% agree. It makes me happy and it's fun and actually funny.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
I disliked this movie for it's humor, lack of a coherent or at least interesting plot or characterization and seeming like a collection of single improvised stand-up comedy skits more than a consistent story.
But what I hated is that you were not allowed to say a word against it in female fandom spaces, without somebody accusing you of being a misogynist and occasionally telling you to go back to reddit.
Years later the attitude is still here, it seems.

I sincerely hope the upcoming reboot is a critical success. (It is still going to flop with audiences, since nobody really cares about Ghostbusters)

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone has their barbs up, I think. I've been in plenty of fandom spaces, male and female alike, where you can't say anything GOOD about it, either.

And after the treatment Leslie Jones received on social media, I think some defensiveness is entirely justified. Not saying that everyone who didn't like the movie was involved in that, but there was a VITROLIC negative reaction that went above and beyond "I just didn't like the movie".
