Titanic. Avatar. Everything James Cameron has ever done really. He's massively overrated as a director.

Not only do I agree with you completely, here are some more movies I find overrated as hell:
Vertigo
Metropolis
Carnival of Souls
It's A Wonderful Life
Eraserhead
Gone With The Wind
Days of Heaven

Certainly agree with you on Gone with the Wind considering how terribly racist it is. And personally I've always hated It's a Wonderful Life. My parents still watch it every year during the Christmas season at some point, and I always stay out of the family room when they do.

Second this so hard. When I watched Avatar I was just like, really? This is it?

Both Avatar and Titanic are so basic. The only part of Titanic I like is when it gives you a few quick cuts of the other passengers, including the ones who know they're not making it into the lifeboats.

The worst part of Titanic is the feeling that there are several more interesting movies going on in the background while you're stuck watching Kate and Leo.

AYRT - This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I honestly find Titanic a bit disrespectful. Because it basically just uses the Titanic and its inherent element of tragedy as a giant, exotic prop?

I'm not clutching my pearls, or crying "shame" on anyone who loves the movie. It's fine to love the movie. But yeah, it just really rubs me the wrong way.

It's also, to me, not comparable to war movies featuring a love story, because war moves that feature love stories tend to still be about war to a greater degree. But also, more importantly, there's a genuine level of emotional cohesion there that basically boils down to people being together and loving each other in the face of a brutal conflict where people are divided and killing each other. (It's not always well done, but at least that aspect is there.)

Whereas with Titanic, there isn't really any natural narrative connection between the tragedy and the love story. The tragedy is just a prop to make the love story poignant. And both elements are props being used to make the other salable. Can't sell a historical move about the Titanic? Make it a love story! Can't sell a love story without some kind of device to elevate it? Make the setting the Titanic!

IA. That's the only part I liked too. I teared up at the mother who put her kids to bed so they could die in their sleep.

Look, I agree about almost all of James Cameron's movies, but the guy did make Terminator 2 and that's a top 5 action movie of all time, almost indisputably

Yeah, I gotta give him that. T2 was bananas good.

Did he also make Aliens? Because again, damn.

Re: Overrated

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I like Aliens but I can understand how people dislike it, not nearly as good as the first one for me

Terminator 2 is just a rock solid slab of perfect action movie making

I'm the other way. I watched Alien and was like, eh, it's good but it's not as good as everybody talks about. Then I watched Aliens and was like, okay, now I get it, fuck yeah. I love both, but for me, the first one is better as part one of two.

But I do agree that T2 is insanely good.

Sorry, not a fan of that one either. I guess you could say it is the best of the Cameron movies, but I don't think that is saying that much. There are a few scenes I like, but I don't like it overall. It is certainly better than Aliens, which in my opinion ruins what was so good about the first one.

I totally agree with you about Avatar and Titanic, but holy shit do I ever disagree with you about T2 and Aliens. I think I have whiplash.

Sorry. To me, the only good movie in the Aliens franchise is Alien. I guess with T2 it is probably more just my personal taste than anything else. I don't think it is an awful movie, and I would say it is his best movie. I just don't like it. But Aliens completely shits on Alien and I think it is not a good movie.

Re: Overrated

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough, taste is taste! Like I think T2 is exceptionally good at what it's trying to do but that doesn't mean you have to like what it's trying to do

IA with Titanic. And I hated Leo in this movie. All's he did was boss Kate around. That's it. We're supposed to root for this dumb couple with an unlikable guy because "at least he doesn't hit her." It was so stupid. The hero doesn't get points for not hitting the heroine. He's not supposed to hit women in the first place.

And another thing is that Kate made it clear that she was with Leo because she was sick of her family dictating her life to her. So what does she decide to run off with? Some starving artist who dictates her life to her.

When Leo died, I was relieved. Not just because the movie was finally over with, but because he finally shut up.

Oh, wow, don't really agree, except for maybe Avatar, which I haven't seen and don't want to.

Aliens is my favorite movie.

Titanic was kind of a phenomenon. The critics sort of wrote it off, at first. But the way people reacted to it in the theaters was something to behold - a lot of the first people to see it, went to see the ship go down, and by the time it did, they didn't want it to, then they came back to watch it with their friends, and it's a long movie, and it stayed in theaters for a long time, breaking box office records and making critics take another look, while the song stayed at the top of the charts. Then people lined up at midnight for the video release. I liked it then, I still like it as a movie, but it is kind of a cultural touchstone.

The there are The Terminator (confession, I like this better than the sequel, but I do like them both), Terminator 2: Judgement Day, The Abyss (it's weird and interesting and intense and has some amazing effects), True Lies (it's just funny).

I like more of Cameron's movies than I do David Fincher's (who I think is an amazing director and has done a comparable amount of feature-length movies).

I can understand not really going for his style, but to think all of his movies are overrated seems a little overstated. I mean, I do not care for Stanley Kubrick's works at all, but I can understand why they might appeal to others.

Yeah, I thought I agreed with philstar at first, but actually, I just don't like Titanic or Avatar. Overall he's really solid. Also, I kind of have to appreciate him for not phoning in the female characters in his stuff.

I felt like with Aliens, he felt the need to change who Ripley was in Alien to make her more feminine, and I found that annoying. Ripley was awesome as she was, there wasn't any need to change her.

I didn't find that at all. She seemed like the same person to me. If anything she just felt more fleshed out and more badass in 2.
