Overrated

Kristen Wiig is not funny

Post other things you think are overrated, or just agree with my correct opinion that Kristen Wiig isn't funny

Since we're being pretty...

Cara Delevinge is not pretty, like at all. Something about her face strikes me as so ghoulish. Tied with the fact that she's a terrible actress, I'm really at a stunned loss for why she's so popular.

Re: Overrated

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that she's not pretty but her face is distinctive and striking in a way that really, really works for me. And with regards to her acting she's certainly not a talented actor but she can bring across a specific sort of bored, over-it superiority really well, so she can be a really effective performer in the right role (and also it makes her really hot).

I watched two different movies before realising that Samara Weaving was not Cara Delevigne.

I find her gorgeous as fuck. Also, an ok actress. Not good, but passable.

Titanic. Avatar. Everything James Cameron has ever done really. He's massively overrated as a director.

Not only do I agree with you completely, here are some more movies I find overrated as hell:
Vertigo
Metropolis
Carnival of Souls
It's A Wonderful Life
Eraserhead
Gone With The Wind
Days of Heaven

Second this so hard. When I watched Avatar I was just like, really? This is it?

Both Avatar and Titanic are so basic. The only part of Titanic I like is when it gives you a few quick cuts of the other passengers, including the ones who know they're not making it into the lifeboats.

Look, I agree about almost all of James Cameron's movies, but the guy did make Terminator 2 and that's a top 5 action movie of all time, almost indisputably

IA with Titanic. And I hated Leo in this movie. All's he did was boss Kate around. That's it. We're supposed to root for this dumb couple with an unlikable guy because "at least he doesn't hit her." It was so stupid. The hero doesn't get points for not hitting the heroine. He's not supposed to hit women in the first place.

And another thing is that Kate made it clear that she was with Leo because she was sick of her family dictating her life to her. So what does she decide to run off with? Some starving artist who dictates her life to her.

When Leo died, I was relieved. Not just because the movie was finally over with, but because he finally shut up.

Oh, wow, don't really agree, except for maybe Avatar, which I haven't seen and don't want to.

Aliens is my favorite movie.

Titanic was kind of a phenomenon. The critics sort of wrote it off, at first. But the way people reacted to it in the theaters was something to behold - a lot of the first people to see it, went to see the ship go down, and by the time it did, they didn't want it to, then they came back to watch it with their friends, and it's a long movie, and it stayed in theaters for a long time, breaking box office records and making critics take another look, while the song stayed at the top of the charts. Then people lined up at midnight for the video release. I liked it then, I still like it as a movie, but it is kind of a cultural touchstone.

The there are The Terminator (confession, I like this better than the sequel, but I do like them both), Terminator 2: Judgement Day, The Abyss (it's weird and interesting and intense and has some amazing effects), True Lies (it's just funny).

I like more of Cameron's movies than I do David Fincher's (who I think is an amazing director and has done a comparable amount of feature-length movies).

I can understand not really going for his style, but to think all of his movies are overrated seems a little overstated. I mean, I do not care for Stanley Kubrick's works at all, but I can understand why they might appeal to others.

i find christopher nolan both incredibly overrated and rather pretentious, his stuff seems clever on the surface but it's really not that deep when you look at it.

and this is only for the books as i haven't seen the show: but i've always thought out of NG's work good omens was a bit overrated, i prefer sandman and think the plotting/pacing of that is better. i still found good omens fun, but i've never thought it was his best work.

i also found thor: ragnarok to be really overrated by the fandom, it had all of the same tone-whiplash issues that everyone hated in the dark world, but for some reason this time everyone was fine with it? it's a shame bc i like taika's work otherwise, but this one was a miss for me, didn't love it like everyone else did.

IA about Nolan and IA that Gaiman is overrated other than Sandman (which is brilliant)

I get where you're coming from on Ragnarok but I think the individual parts were just fun and distinctive enough to work, especially by the standards of MCU flicks

I'm not usually that person who mistakes actors for other actors, but Jesus. I just realized I've been mixing up Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon for ages. Now I don't know if Kristen Wiig is funny. Kate McKinnon is fucking hilarious, I'm sure of that.

Piggybacking off yours, Bridesmaids is overrated and unfunny.

To really get my head put on a spike here, I don't like most John Hughes movies. I've tried, I've really tried, but I just don't vibe with anything of his besides Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and even that I like more because of nostalgia (rewatching it last year, it, uh. It didn't age well in places).

Neil Gaiman. He has good ideas but his character writing is flat and dull. Also I think everything good about Good Omens came from Terry Pratchett and that's why the miniseries felt so soulless (also I'm still iiritated about Gaiman sticking in the awkward and out of character Tori Amos line just because she's his friend. That's a twelve year old writing their first fanfic level of bad).

A lot of people seem to like Radio Flyer. There seems to be a lot of nostalgia for it, at least. I honestly have no idea why. For about 90 minutes there's this super-realistic portrayal of child abuse and what's the solution? It's to build a flying machine out of your red wagon and run away forever. And that's somehow heartwarming.

And now there's a grown man flying around in a little red wagon, and that's somehow not laughable.

It was pretty cool when the dog attacked the step dad though. I liked that part.
