Yeah, if it's spelling and grammar errors, I can definitely see why you wouldn't want to put your name on that. I edit the absolute fuck out of my stories and I greatly value my beta readers assistance in that, so for someone to disregard the time they spent fixing it is a bit of an insult. To the readers as well who have to slog through something the author didn't care enough about to polish. I suppose they just want compliments at that point and they expect a beta reader to give them more in depth praise. I don't necessarily follow all of my beta reader's wishes, but if they're pointing out a problem in my story, then it's probably still a problem whether they can properly articulate why or not.

That sucks. Usually I see people noting that all mistakes are their, but I guess it doesn't matter much when they just ignore all your advice.

Yeah, when people can't be bothered to correct basic mistakes, I refuse to waste any effort reading their fic. I'm guessing they don't want a proper beta job, they want squee. Nah, thanks.

Yeah, these people aren't worth taking the time to edit for; there are some people that are just completely incapable of applying changes. My favourite facepalm moment was someone who just went ahead and uploaded exactly what I sent them without looking at it. So their fic included all my comments like [this sentence is missing a verb; I have no idea what you're trying to say here].

I did the same. I really enjoy betaing fic! I don't mind if they don't follow my suggestions! But I do mind if they just slap the draft up there and don't even change the SPAG.

Holy cow, are you me? My friend did this to me. I beta'ed her story and she didn't even correct basic spelling and grammar issues. I was mortified. Thankfully she hasn't written fic since even though she keeps claiming she wants to.

This is why I never read fics I beta when they're posted (also why I usually beta in fandoms I'm not particularly active in, I'm less likely to accidentally stumble across a fic I've beta'ed that way). Then I don't have to worry about whether or not they followed my advise. It's a mystery to me!

Now if I were teaching a class and having to grade such things, that'd be an entirely different discussion.

I can see someone not taking advice about style, but asking for someone to look for mistakes and then leaving the mistakes in is just weird.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-05 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
They don't want someone to fix mistakes, they want more in depth compliments.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-05 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I don't beta anymore for people I do know because my friend asked me for critique and then went off on me when I gave her critique. And it wasn't anything mean. I am not the Gordon Ramsay of fic.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-05 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
I have been known to make all the corrections, then upload the uncorrected fic by mistake. /o\

(Anonymous) 2020-02-05 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
That's just crazy rude. I am not great at changing up my fics and I know that (I can't draft for shit, which is why I'm not a better writer, and that's that on that). But when I used to get things beta read, even I fixed all the grammatical errors they pointed out, and at least tried to implement some kind of tweak for like 85% of the other stuff they pointed out.

I can't believe someone would be so shameless as to ignore even the SPAG corrections. Jesus.
