Keep your responses sympathetic, but short and repetitive, i.e. "Aw, that sucks" "So sorry to hear that" and "That sounds really rough". Or maybe do that and change the subject. You can try to be subtle about it if you value this friendship, but the key question I'm wondering here is... does your friend reciprocate by being a sympathetic listener when YOU need to vent?
