If you were in the fandom, you know that the prejudices people had about both the canon and the fans were really exaggarated.

I wasn't in the fandom but I was friends with some people that were and yeah, they were in the unfortunate position where the terrible fans were really visible. 90% of the fandom was pretty normal.

Honestly, the way the Hetalia fandom was perceived by a lot of outsiders was really OTT. The most offensive thing the comic ever did was your standard Japanese ouch jokes about Koreans, before the artist wisely never touched onto it again. The fandom was 80% yaoi fangirls and 18% high-brown "intellectuals" writing OOC fic in the name of ~historical correctness~.
