It's fifteen years late, but THIS THIS THIS. I'm all for ship and let ship, but I never understood the devotion the fandom had to this pairing. The worst part? I hung around in the slash-centred parts of it, and even in the "everyone is gay" fic, TK and Kari were somehow the exception.

The worst part of this secret what that I could HEAR the English dub Kari Voice saying, "TK's right".

I haven't watched this show in YEARS and even I heard it

Idk, 12 year old me was crushed they didn't end up together? So there is a nostalgia element, plus it being het meant that it had a reasonable chance of happening (even very young me knew that Tai and matt wouldn't end up together).

They might be vanilla, but I can still see why people ship it... now Mimi/Izzy on the other hand are my ??? popular Digimon ship. I've read the explanations people had for why it's so popular in Japan (and it has gotten more popular in the West with Tri, too) but I still don't get it (which is fine, shipping sometimes works differently in different cultures).

Mimi/Izzy is cute, imo. I only have the vaguest memories of the original Digimon, and for whatever reason I thought they got along well.

SA

Oh, it's not that they're not cute or that they hated each other, I just always thought they were more of a pair-the-spares kind of ship instead of an OTP interaction-wise? Not that one can't seriously ship them, just never occured to me that so many people would.

ayrt

I looked it up and I guess he just has a crush on her in Tri. For some reason I thought he did in Adventure, but I might have been misremembering the time when they found each other after being separated in the desert.

There was an early episode where they got separated from everyone else together and trapped in a maze or something, and their personalities clashed a lot when they tried to get out, in a very classic "think with your head" vs. "think with your heart" scenario. I don't ship it, but from that episode alone I can see why it's popular.

Technically having their digimon match is something that makes me ship them. I'd rather them be together since they have history and agreeable personalities, and aren't a completely dartboard ship.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-09 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
That's the reason I ship them too.

I dunno, man. The matching digimon made them feel like soulmates. Plus, they always seemed to get along and understand each other really well. They were about as compatible as a pairing gets on children's TV.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-09 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
This was little!me's reasoning and tbh it's grown up me's reasoning too.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-09 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
This is the only ship I can say I 100% despised in 02.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-09 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, idk, I think most of us here were like... 10-11 when Digimon was running its first season? And they'd already started in on the shades of the two of them kid!crushing on each other, which was sweet. And in 02 they layered it on more and it felt like a natural extension. Idk, I was 12 and it wasn't that deep. It was a cute ship that I liked, because I thought they made sense together in a sweet way.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-09 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
But what I don't get is that if TK/Kari was not that deep, why was the rest of the ending that deep? Are 12-year-olds actually concerned with heteronormativity and everyone getting married and having kids?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-09 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
I guess it's because, at least in my case, I wasn't thinking that far ahead? I liked what they were and I liked to think about them dating and stuff, but idk, having literally everyone pair off into clean het relationships in the end (a lot of which made zero sense and had no build-up in the least) felt really weird, even to kid!me. Like, maybe knowing gay people all my life and having them around me helped, but I honestly did think it was weird that not one person in that whole huge group was gay. Or unwilling to have children, even.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-09 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
But like... There's only two inter-kid pairings??? And that's Yamato/Sora and Ken/Miyako.
