I had a really hard time trying to figure out how old the character was supposed to be, because any answer to that question managed to be creepy in different ways.

Casting adults as children/teenagers is so common I barely even notice it anymore.

Well yeah, but... I think she's supposed to be younger than a teen, which is the problem. I'm not totally sure, though. Casting a 20-something to play a teenager is one thing, casting a 20-something to play someone who feels like they're supposed to be an actual child is just weird.

ayrt

Very true, though whenever they choose not to cast children I generally feel that the show just didn't want the hassle of kids on set. I probably should judge them harder for it, but I can never seem to manage to.

I can't speak for the intention in The Untamed, but I recently had reason to look it up and A-Qing is described as 15-16 in the novel (when her ghost appears after her death). That surprised me, because I'd gotten the impression of her as being more like 12-14.

I was just glad they got that flashback out of the way in the space of one episode, it felt like it went on forever in the novel and I just wanted to get back to the Wei WuXian field trip hour.

Oh God, same. I enjoyed some parts of the novel but that part went on and on and on...
