when my 1st gen Nook died, I started shopping around for a new ereader that was better for pdfs and could read a million formats and had a backlight and was easy to use calibre on and ended up with a Kobo Forma. I've looooved it-- it has integrated Overdrive support if your local library does that sort of thing, but you literally never have to see any kind of storefront or any social ANYTHING if you sideload books (which I do). I actually couldn't tell you if books purchased through their store/interface do the things you mention not liking about the Kindle, because I've never used it.

Seriously, I cannot recommend Kobo enough to anyone who's looking for a non-Amazon e-reader. It's been so, so awesome.
